Hi All

This is my first post. As with all newbie's posting questions on forums, I suspect I will get many "did you search?" responses.

However if someone could please help, I would appreciate it.

I need to get a static IP address on a wireless or 3g connection. It does not need to be mobile ( i.e. I don't need it to work at different locations ).

My problem is as follows:

1. We are in an area where there is no adsl/fixed line services. There used to be, but due to excessive cable theft, Telkom has stopped replacing cables.
2. I need to have a static IP to support a remote client. They will not allow me to dial in if I don't have it.

I am currently using 8ta as my service provider, but in one of the posts here, it indicates that 8ta does not provide this. I don't know if this has changed since that post.

I used to have it on Iburst. I've tried to get hold of them thrice already with no response. I don't really want to go the Iburst route, but will if necessary. They had previously billed me for months after my contract had been cancelled and it was a time consuming and frustrating exercise to reverse it.

What are my options?

DDNS server and unrestricted APN (8ta provides by default) should work for you. Read about DDNS how it works. It is frequently used for remote access of home security system (cameras) when on the road.
Search this forum which routers are suitable for this application, there are many posts by Base122.

fixed ip != dynamic ip with dns on it :P

The OP has a security requirement to have the same public IP address on his outgoing connection that he makes to a remote application.

DynDNS is good for incoming connections to the connection, not for outgoing connections

Tell us why we do need static IP for remote client (as indicated in the post) and why DDNS is not sufficient, please.

Could be a specific client that has a strict firewall, and they will only allow incoming packets on a specific port from a specific IP. We do that a lot with FTP with the data we work with.

Sorry, I didn't read initial post correctly. As warwickw explained it is about outgoing connection for identification. I think Vodacom had offered static IP in the past, with IPV6 it shouldn't be problem to continue this service.

Thank you all for the responses so far.

Yes, the issue is that the client will only open the firewall for specific IP addresses.

I have sent another request to Iburst, still no response. It seems they do not want any business.
