Stupid question

I applied and received a static IP from Afrihost.

I have a Netgear DG834G V5 router and have entered the IP address there.

Is there anything else that I need to do on the router?

I need to access a server from work and hence got the static IP.

Regards

Why do you want a static IP? It sucks.

If you host a gaming server and friends connect to you but your IP changes all the time rather get a NO-IP account.

Why does it suck ,child? There are lots of things that you can do with a static IP that you can't do with your dynamic IP account. That includes mail delivery, VPN and ssl

You can do VPN and mail delivery with a dynamic IP, SSL won't work as you will be using CNAME DNS records

Most IT people on this forum would love a static IP, and would actually have one if it didn't cost extra, or if it was easily available for mobile connections. It definitely does not suck.

Hi geta

You could potentially save yourself a rand or two with something like dyndns or similar.

Seeing how you have a static IP...I'd imagine that setting up port forwarding would be sufficient.

Also...you need to think about security...expect a shtstorm of evil people knocking at the door of your freshly minted static IP with port forwarding.

That being said - I've never done something like this - so I'm flying blind here...the other responses just seemed a bit thin so I opted to post anyway.

You can VPN on dynamic ips too.
My first thought too. It sounds like he wants to VPN from office to home though, not the other way round.

Doesn't work like that - you get your static ip via a VPN. L2TP without IPsec - which your Netgear cannot do.
http://www.afrihost.com/site/page/static_ip_configuration_settings

And don't get the billion router, they don't work, get the zyxel

Hence why they say the encapsulation is not PPPOe but L2TP???? Something to do with Telkom.

@Havoc - you're right - work to home.

How would I have a dynamc name automatically update? got one - gforceza.dyndns.co.za. I need it to point to a static (or some say a dynamc) ip address.

No the dyn dns is a workaround for if you don't have a static IP.
