Static IP?

Right, you are going to tell me it is impossible with TelkomInternet, and all that, but I need to ask anyway.

How in the world can I set up a static IP? I have been following this guide (want to set up port forwarding): http://portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm and I get stuck at command promt. the only thing I get when I do IPConfig, is a lot of 10.0.0.2, and I know for a fact THAT is not my external IP. I know what my external IP is, but why does mine show 10.0.0.2 and not one similar to that in the screenshot?
 
Your external Ip isn't static on a Telkominternet account. When you do an ipconfig you see only your lan IP if you are using your router as a router (and not in bridged mode). This is because only your router has a WAN (external) IP, not your computer. If you want someone on the WAN side to see a particular computer on your LAN you need to forward that port to your internal LAN IP, or setup your router in bridged mode.
 
Your LAN Ip can be static, but not your WAN IP (Unless you go for an uncapped IS account).
 
The 10.0.0.2 is probably the ip adress the router assigned to your pc, have we got a telkom router?
 
lol, no worries, I;ve got a telkom router too. It works, gives me okay speed and I'm running two pc's on it, to access your router type in 10.0.0.2 in the browser adress bar and press enter, the username is: admin and the password is: administrator.

Play around with your router settings, but check portforward out first, read the guides, they've got the telkomadsl router on the site.

Just remember to change your router's default password, because anyone could access it without you knowing.


Edit: sorry for the mistake, your lan ip adress is probably 10.0.0.3, the gateway is 10.0.0.2

Or :D you can get iBurst (any size of account) and for about R200 extra per month you can get a static IP... no VPN to deal with, no special router - much simpler in my book....
 
I'm relatively new to ADSL and networking so you other experts out there please correct me if I'm going completely off the track. I also battled with port forwarding, but eventualy got it right. I hope this will help you.

To do port forwarding you don't need a static external IP. The static IP they refer to here is simply your local network IP and yes it will be 10.0.0.something. Mine is 10.0.0.11

The 10.0.0.something IP range is just one of the diferent IP ranges reserved for internal networks. They are simply using a diferent range there. Just follow the steps exactly as they describe it there and you will be fine. Write down the info that you get from IPConfig and use that numbers and don't wory if it don't mach their numbers.

It might be a good idea to disable the DHCP Server on your modem/router and give each pc on your home network its own unique 10.0.0.x IP. If you have only one PC then NOT disabling DHCP should not give you a problem, but if you have more than one PC the modem might just asign your static IP to another PC while your PC is turned off and you will get errors that pop up some days and other days they don't. I might be wrong on this point, but that is how I understand how these things work.

What do you want a static IP for? In most instances all you require is LAN static IPs for port forwarding as willemvdm said. Either turn off DHCP and assign all of your PCs their own IPs or leave DHCP on and assign an IP outside the allocation range to the pc in question.
 
I would love a static IP because that means that I can run a local mail server and maybe host some things locally. For a business this can come in really handy I would think. One problem is that Telkom conveniently does not offer this. Probably because it would make their diginet customers move away from diginet. Cool that Iburst have a static IP but my experience with them was something I don't want to re-live again. Wish there was static IP's available for ADSL (at a rate that people can actually afford) ... sigh... If I remember right then I paid something like $1 per month for a static IP on a dedicated server in the USA a while ago... The joys of SA Internet and Telkom... I wish Telkom was not merely here to exploit it's customers...
 
Thanks I will give them a try but isn't there a time-window when the domain won't be available when Telkom switches the IP address ? (If I remember right then the DNS needs to be updated at dyndns.com and the update may take a while. (Couple of minutes))
 
Why would you want to host off an crappy adsl line when you can get professional hosting (web and email) for $5 a month? It just doesnt make sense to me.
