(whether the rumours are true or not)

If a steam console where to hit the market, would you buy it?
Would you choose it above other consoles?

Yes and yes, depeding on prices and game library size.

Right now the Xbox 360 is aging and I never liked the pricetag of PS3 games.
I think steam has a business model much more focused on service delivery. Immagine if you could get any game on steam running on a "steam box"....

Me to. For this reasons.

1. The rumoured specs for the next generation consoles is not that impressive.
2. Where going to have to live with that specs for 8 years again.
3. I'd rather pay more for my console and less for the games. R600 for a game..ouch

If anything Steam might shake up the industry

Hell no. Already have a PS3 and a computer for grown-up games.

If it had superior hardware to other consoles, cost the same or less, and kept their game prices the same, they would have a winner.

That said, I remember somebody once telling me that ms runs at a loss/ breaks even on the hardware and makes profit on services and games. Is this still the case?

Based on the research I have done on the steam console it will effectively be an i7 mini itx box with a to end Nvidia mobile graphics card built into it.

So you get a pre built little PC with steam pre loaded onto it. I can definitely see a market for it and it should create a nice benchmark for gaming companies to build to.

So overkill CPU with a poor GPU, with poor cooling? Ya, I'll pass... And it wont be a nice benchmark to build to at all imo, it will be low to start with, and then it'll just get progressively worse. Just like... current consoles!
If its just a mini PC... well you can build that yourself.

What it should have read was "from the rumours I have heard on the steam console...."
