Hi All,
Can I download games from steam from my (Telkom) local bandwidth. It says it is using local servers (Cape town).
I just don't want to waste all my international bandwidth when i can use the local.

Thanks.

Check with your ISP about the cap that you are allocated for local downloads.

I am on uncapped from Axxess, and with the recent Xmas holiday sale I bought just about every full price title for a song (Skyrim, Deus Ex Human Revolution, The Witcher, Batman Arkham City, to name but a few). In total I've had to download more than 180Gb, and that is just Steam all from locally hosted Internet Solutions.

Sort answer: No.

Any usage will first be used against your blended/international cap before switching to your local cap. There are ways around this if you know what you are doing of course.

Thank you for the feedback.

Agreed. I understand that the blended/international cap has to be exhausted before the local cap can actually be utilized. What I was getting at is, for instance, I have AOE3 complete downloading. I can stop the steam download, use my normal cap for international site downloads and then once capped, resume downloading games from steam. Honestly, that would be great because I never use my local bandwidth. Once capped, that's it, I usually just wait till the next month.

Your problem with 'resuming' a steam download while you are capped is that steam likes to have an active international connection while downloading. You would have to resort to a multiple account solution using eg. routesentry. In other words you would split your traffic so that international traffic goes via a cheap backup account (Afrihost) and all your local traffic runs via your capped telkom account.

Then there is also the old way I used to do it (not sure if this still works): At the end of the month I would cap my Telkom account. Then on the first day of the new month my capped session would still be active, allowing me to open a new session and then use routesetry to split my traffic over the old capped and new blended session. Worked like a freaking charm.

Why not just test it out and see first? Not like it will cost you anything.

Remember the "region" option in Steam.

If you change it to Africa, MWEB, then it pulls from MWEB's servers.
I haven't looked in a while, but I know there is MWEB, WebAfrica servers, maybe there is a Telkom account.

Why not get a WebAfrica account, cheapo, then use the WAGE option to download the games via STEAM. :)
