Financially it may not make sense or they are not aware of the issue.

I understand the OP's frustration. I just purchased Dawn of War 2 and used 1/2 my 1gig data bundle. I just don't blame Steam for our highly abnormal internet connectivity situation.

So they don't update the games at all then? Wow, could of sworn I got new maps for Css when I updated it. Ive never seen any of these "promos" that people speak of.

Anyone can set up a Steam content server. Gamearena (in the states) have one, IS has one and there are many around the world. We should be blaming IS for having a very poor content server (and many other ISPs for not having one at all)

EDIT: Look I'm happy that IS is hosting one, but they seem to cache very little content, mostly patches. New patches take a while to get cached locally as well. So having a local server with little content is not really helping.

That does not mean Steam = Horse manure, it means that they should have informed you on the box that you would require an internet connection or steam to install and play the game.
Steam is a pretty cool service for those with a dsl connection.

1. They may update the platform from time to time, but no, CSS hasn't been updated for a long time.
2. Steam does not provide maps. These are downloaded from the server just before you join. You can download them independently if you know where to look.
3. They change the promo's every day and they also include discounts. The major discounts are offered on weekends. If you haven't seen them, then I doubt whether you've run CSS or something is very strange on your system.

Promo's are fed through HTML, no need to update Steam for that ...

OK, so I took my PC to work. Thinking I could quickly just download the damn STEAM and install the game.

Not so fast.

Apparantly STEAM has major issues connecting through a router/firewall. I had to connect my PC straight to the internet, bypassing the router. What a mission.

Eventually I got it installed, created an account and installed the game.
And I must say it's not that bad a program.

They just need to make a "internet deprived" version of the installer, so you don't need to download 50Mb+ before you can do anything.

I like steam. Would like it even more if I didn't have to pay per gig, would then be able to use their store. They have some great specials on weekends.
 
The idea of Steam is great. A single place to play/purchase all your games. However the execution is not great. Laggy to get in and around, buggy, slow and it poses tons of problems for LANs.

Again the idea is sound, the execution is rubbish.

Get this, I install WM2 and during installation it asks for disk 3??????

There was only 2 DVDs in the case and as far as I know that is the correct amount. So I try the other DVD again and it doesn't work then swap back to the DVD that was present when it asked for the 3rd and then it continues to copy.

Still ignorantly smiling I run the game... "Incomplete installation" ??? wtf??

So I right click the f'nnn thing and verify the game cache via steam and now when I try to run the pile of c@#p it tells me to try again later the game is unavailable... am I on candid camera???

No seriously you can come out now, its not funny. I know your hiding behind the curtains.

Steam = the Vietnam war in PC gaming. Costs a lot. Doesn't work. Lots of people were killed. The public is against it.
