Steam Machine

It is a nice to have device, but it is simply too expensive. Even given the DRAM situation, its competition is better. As much as I hate to say this, Helix/PS6 will most likely be better value. You can always DIY your own Steam Machine, and there is at least some value in used goods though that is crazy IMHO as well.

I have some reviews. Some reviewers are really trying to put the Steam Machine in the best light. Good review notes Valve ;)

Until you find out they cost 50% more or are stripped down so much you need to spend the equivalent anyway to upgrade storage etc.

That the 512GB steam box even exists is crazy, but I guess upgrading is always an option.

PS6 will have a CPU 3 generations ahead of the Steam machine, a GPU 2 generations ahead, with at least double the starting storage.

Even if that comes in at 50% more than the current $599.99 PS5 Digital, that's still $899.99 for a far better product thanks to Sony being able to subsidize.

No you misunderstood…I meant if it comes in 50% more than the Steam Machine.

And I bloody home it starts with a baseline 2TB but I fear even that is wishful thinking.

Even with subsidising something has got to give. It can’t have everything better and still be cheaper, simply not possible.

So either the consoles edge into the $1499-$1999 territory or they stay away another 3-4 years hoping things get better.

If the next consoles cost 50% more than a Steam Machine you might as well cancel the generation. $1569 for a console is unaffordable, that's like R38k here.

2Tb base isn't happening. I like my 2Tb Pro but I'd be happy with a 1Tb base console, will encourage me to trim my backlog.

I also think unified memory will be cut to 24Gb instead of the planned 32Gb, still a 40% bandwidth bump and a 50% capacity bump versus the PS5 though.

Yup, sorry I added another paragraph there at the end as you posted.

But I agree it’s not sustainable but they also can’t run it at such a loss.

So either the price goes up or the next generation stays 3-4 years away.

1TB base on the PS5 is already extremely broken unless they sort out the OS to make up for it somehow.

Xbox even with 5 quick resume slots is far more friendly with 1TB but even so it’s not a great baseline.

So compromises are going to be made, and the price will still be high.

lol I’m seeing this trend and they’re trying their absolute best.
Even Dave2d, who used to be my favourite YouTuber says that it isn’t overpriced and plays games well at 1080p when his own charts show that it can’t even break 60 fps at high settings

I was baffled

They are doing for what they are paid for. The speaking points are too familiar among the various reviewers, you can feel the notes bundled with their NDAs (and whatnot agreements). I don't hate the Steam Machine, but I don't think that it is good value, and Valve possibly knows that as well. It will have its market, regardless, and somebody has to buy it in order for it to succeed.

I'd rather believe that a lot of people want it to succeed because it will break up the monopolies and high game prices a bit if you can buy a bunch of discounted older games and just have fun on the couch.

I suspect it’s going to be a very good second hand buy in the not too distant future.

After seeing the Specs & Pricing, I am sooooo glad now that I pulled the trigger for my DIY Steambox in November last year instead of waiting.

Got a GMKtec K8+ and Radeon 7600 for R20 000.

Just disappointed with the performance. I was hoping this could replace my gaming laptop that I have to hook up to the tv for some couch gaming, but at that price and performance, I will just keep doing what I am now.

I think this has to be the way. I don't even think this generation is close to running its course. Nobody is screaming for better consoles, they are screaming for better games (looking at you Xbox)

Today, Valve has announced the Steam Machine will start at $1,049 without a gamepad, or $1,128 bundled with one, but you aren’t getting a significant boost in performance over the 5.5-year-old Sony PS5 you can still buy today.

It’s the best attempt I’ve seen at a PC that actually fits into a living room, and far better than anything I could build from parts. Valve’s bet on the Steam Machine is that you literally can’t build it yourself. Even if you had the design and engineering chops, Valve tells The Verge it’s selling these components at cost, negotiating with suppliers to get you the best deal amid a memory supply and demand crisis like the world’s never seen before.

But is it good enough for $1,049? That depends on what you actually expect this PC to do — and whether Valve manages to reduce some of the lingering friction before it winds up at your door.
