SteamOS

Not sure where to post this, could be under Linux,Gaming or News..

I am an avid Valve fan, and have been using steam quite a bit over the last few years, so the release of SteamOS is quite interesting.

So your thoughts on this and the Steam Machine is it a fad or is there more to it ?

I think that the Steam Machine is a brilliant idea, but it will take a lot to have people migrate from their current gaming PC's and consoles to the Steam Machine. But Steam OS is a start.

I would prefer a Steam Machine to a next gen console, FWIW.

Agreed! I looked at some of the games on Steam for Linux still a way to go but it is getting there, I will give this a go for sure...

Just hope that they control the OEM for this, not too tightly but it would be sad if fonkong takes over and sinks the ship bevore it even sails....

That is the worry. Also, looking at the specs of the Steam machines that they sent the beta testers- they are very highly specced, worth at least three times the amount of next gen consoles. It will be difficult for them to position a Steam Machine alongside a console, and PC gamers will also consider the fact that their gaming PC's can play any game (if running Windows) and has more than a singular purpose.

Will be interesting to see - in essence Steam positions SteamOS as the living-room gaming console and as such goes head-2-head with Nintendo, Sony & Microsoft. I seriously doubt that current desktop gamers would migrate (same can be said about console gamers as well). So it really leaves a small segment of new users (and perhaps gadget freaks).

Also running on Linux it leaves out all other platforms (especially Windows) and I don't think Steam will make games on proprietary platforms available on SteamOS - or? I don't see this take off - too much hype and just wrong target market (no different than Ouya in my mind).

Yeah Sony and MS, have huge subsidies or the like on their consoles as they make the cash on the games, so you get some bang for your buck buying the console. I don't see Valve doing this as they do not own all the game titles, so these machines won't compete cost wise if I look at the specs.

The issue is also compatibility if I buy a PS or XBOX game I know it will work! This is very different with steam machinem, different vendors and older and newer versions of Steam machine this could be a huge issue. In my mind that is what console gaming is about and I don't see that in the current setup of SteamOS.

I also though it could go a similar route to Ouya, but I want this to work hahahaaha, see more games to Linux haha

If these sort of games can run on Linux, then why not 3D CAD programs? Autodesk Inventor is my sole reason for running Window$.

I think 3D or Cad apps can run there most likely are some, but most likely it is not worth the effort to redevelop for the Linux community profit wise by companies such as Autodesk.

Can I point out that you don't need your games to be on Steam?

Steam OS will be able to stream your games from your Windows PC, so it allows you to play any game you want and park your ass on the couch and enjoy.

Sounds interesting do you have more info on this ?

"This technology doesn't allow you to "play" Windows games as much as it allows the heavy lifting to be performed on a Windows machine on your local network and then streamed to the box running Steam OS."

quote from a different site, people have the perception that the actual box cannot play windows based games this is correct, what it does is allow streaming from a Windows machine on your network to your steam os so you can crash on a couch and play Assassins Creed or Batman with Xbox360 controller, this is the sole reason i am waiting for the beta to finish so we can get the finished product

Sure there must be a cheaper route of streaming data to your TV.
