Hey all,

I've just got a new PC and I need to reinstall Steam and team Fortress 2. Can I just copy the updated files from my old machine (i.e. everything that gets downloaded every time a patch comes out) or do I need to do an install and then download all the game patches from scratch again?

If I can copy the files from my old machine, which ones do I need to copy?

You should be able to install Steam and then copy the steamapps folder over. Never done it myself, but I've heard this method described on the Steam forums.

There is a backup and restore function built into steam, use that, it works well. Be aware that it does not backup your saved games etc. Head over to the steam forums and they'll point you in the right direction.

This works.

Usually what I do is to install Steam, kill it if it's running, and then just copy my old stuff over.

Start Steam, it will run a client update, and eventually (may take awhile) you'll get back in. If you don't see your games, find ClientRegistry.blob and delete it, then restart Steam.

Sorted guys, thanks. I did a backup and restore. The restore process was a bit tempramental, but it worked eventually.
