There has been some wild speculation that SteamOS may be based on Ubuntu, but that is not the case:
Valve has confirmed that its operating system, SteamOS, will not be based on Ubuntu, as previously believed.

Ever since Valve announced that it was making its own Linux operating system, most users assumed that it was going to be Ubuntu-based, given the partnership between the products. It seems now that that is not the case.

While visiting Valve, the guys from Engadget found out from the horse’s mouth that SteamOS was a custom-built Linux OS and it had nothing to do with Ubuntu. So much for that rumor.

The new operating system is scheduled for launch in 2014, although Valve has yet to provide a timeline or any other details.

It's also unsure what's going to happen with the Valve and Canonical partnership when SteamOS is released. We'll keep you apprised with any new information as it becomes available.

Thank you Geezuz :P

So whats it based on or dont they say O.o

OMGAWD I hope its not an RHL distro... I would throw up on my console if it was...

At this stage all that is said is that it is a Linux based Steam only release, no software centre, no applications outside of Steam.

So we'll have to wait and see what the final product looks like and if indeed it is nothing more than a console frontend.

Nice. Lets hope its still broadly debian flavoured though.

Eish - that is not so great. Lets hope that lends itself to being haxed.

The article actually says it is their own custom build, so not really sure what it is based on, but using their own choices are probably for the best, lets just hope they make some good choices.

Its steam they always make good choices. Also in the 21st century, deviating from a working distro to build your own requires to much man power unless this is a close off system with its own packagemanger and its own FSH blah blah blah... you get the idea... so its unwise to do that... very unwise...

FUUUUU.... I hope its just debian, testing for worse case... no ubuntu or other *** please :(
