Pretoria - Reeva Steenkamp's parents are currently in "very sensitive negotiations" with Oscar Pistorius over compensation for the death of their daughter, their lawyer has confirmed.

Beeld reported on Wednesday that the Advocate Dup de Bruyn is representing Barry and June Steenkamp. He also represented Fred van der Vyver in the Inge Lotz murder case.

De Bruyn told Beeld that the negotiations were at a sensitive stage and he did not want to comment further for fear of scuppering the talks.

He also declined to comment on the amount being negotiated. Weekend media reports indicated that the amount could be in the region of R2m to R3m.

Pistorius shot Reeva Steenkamp dead in his home on Valentine's Day in 2013, claiming he thought she was an intruder.

Steenkamp's parents claimed that she supported them financially, and they fell on hard times after her death, no longer being able to afford the rental on their Port Elizabeth home.

Pistorius will appear before Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa in the North Gauteng High Court in March on murder charges.

Not surprised.. she was supporting them financially.

But I remember in the past , it almost sound like they were more worried about their finances then anything else..

edit: what will happen when they agree and he pays? Will he go to court..? If he says no , then what?

This I really don't understand.

So he is giving them money that they can buy a stronger prosecution against him ?

WTF

Surely the amount will be / should be more if he actually murdered her, rather than just accidentally shot her?

Why don't they wait for the outcome of the case? Then maybe they can get even more money?

They don't pay for the prosecution, the State pays for the prosecution in murder cases.

It is 2 seperate cases, the one brought by the Steenkamps is civil and the one brought by the State is criminal.

Think in terms of OJ Simpson to understand it better :) . In that instance, he was found not guilty of the crime of murder, but his victims' families won millions in their civil suit against him.

Ja, I know that. What I mean is that the civil suit will be strenghthened by their claim that he maliciously shot her in cold blood as opposed to an accident.

Accidental death = R3 to R5 Million civil claim.
Murder = R10 to R15 Million civil claim.

Surely somebody who killed another person in cold blood should pay more than one who just had an accident?

They do seem to battle financially.

Not anymore, they received a few million ronds from BBC for story exclusives and have bought a pub just outside EL which they are operating now.Now they want some of Oscars dough...DOH!

Huh? The state is prosecuting him.

It is much easier to win a civil case if the state's case has already been proven. There will be automatic bias to awarding a larger sum, maybe this is why they want to get it sorted now, in case he gets found guilty

If I was that family, I would say, I do not want your dirty money, I want the world to know that you are guilty.

Think of the opposite scenario: what if Pistorius' dream team get him off the hook? If your logic is to be followed and they had to wait for the criminal case to be finalised, that would harm their civil claim.

Maybe they thought they would take their chances now.

Nevertheless, IMO it is 2 distinctly seperate cases.

I don't think they could get any less than R3 Million.... seems to me they are just desperate and need money now, so they are sacrificing any hope of a larger sum, just to settle in the short run. Playing it overly safe.
