No, not necessarily. The settlement could simply state that he acknowledges her death was an accident and that they have been deprived of income.

He has already acknowledged that he killed her.

So the outcome of the states' case doesn't really make a difference in this regard.

In fact if he is found guilty of murder by the state he will probably not be able to pay as much compensation because he will lose any sponsorship that he has left. Ofc, it will be easier to claim compensation, but whats the point if he is in jail ?

If he is found not guilty, i.e. it was an accident, then he gets to keep his career and therefore will be able to pay more for the "accidental" killing, which he as already admitted to.

This is also very different to the OJ Simpson case, where he denied killing as well. Also, the US is not SA. Compensation laws are very different.

Is there precedent for such civil suits in this country? Or will they go the route of that Bees and the metro cop where they reach an agreement that helps Oscar out on the criminal side? I don't see how Oscar would agree to anything that doesn't limit his liability and at best keep him out of jail.

He's not judging them, he says he doesn't want to be in such a situation. I don't want to be in that situation either, that's why I have adequate live insurance and have learnt about retirement stuff and am saving for that.

now this really irks me. i'm all for the steenkamps claiming compensation from pistorius don't get me wrong but for parents to be dependent on their kids just gets under my skin. they should have been prepared for their retirement. what if their daughter didn't bring home the bacon over the past years and support them as she did? they wouldn't have had that money.

Who knows what happened that got them in such a precarious financial position? It is easy to say someone should have done this or that, but life is not always that straightforward.
