Hi guys. Not sure if I'm posting in the right section, but I'm not really an expert on anything gaming related so thought I'd ask here, if anyone can assist :)

I'm planning on buying my son a steering wheel for the PS3 for his 5th birthday next month.I'm not looking for anything expensive at all. I found this on Takealot. Just want some advice on whether or not something like this will work for games like GT5 and ModNation Racers. If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I used a Logitech Driving Force Pro on a PS3 and worked perfectly. Don't know about the Genius wheels, but the flight stick I had from them was garbage.

I wouldn't touch that wheel, nor would any GT5 racer that I know, but it is for a 5 year old kid and I'm sure he would be happy.
The only way that you are going to get something respectable and not break the bank is to look for an used item.

The problem with those type of wheels is that are normally no force feedback or resistance in the wheel, which make it difficult to gauge steering.
Try sagamer.co.za

Not sure if you are aware, but the the online servers for GT5 have been closed down.

Edit:
If you can post or PM your budget i might possibly put you in touch with guys that might want to sell their DFGT.

Love my Thrustmaster wireless Ferrari replica wheel.

Thanks, guys. I was looking for something that doesn't break the bank, so maybe R500 or less ? He's 5, so it will end up broken in a year or less which is why I'm just looking for something to keep him busy and entertained.

I would not do it.

The steering wheels do not give you a fraction of the smooth driving capability as the controller. It will likely be tossed aside.

There are other ways to spend R500 on gaming stuff. Maybe a new headset.

He's gonna be 5. He can barely play those games. He just likes crashing into stuff. Kids love getting behind the wheel of anything :)

Have to agree with you. They are in it for the total enjoyment and pure fun factor. It is only us adults that needs excuses to explain why we are so slow.
:p

Yep. Think I'm just gonna take a chance on that Genius wheel for now. Just checked my email and got a response from earlier this afternoon from the guys at Takealot who say they have a 30 day return policy, where if I'm not satisfied with the product they'll credit me as long as it's returned in the original condition etc. It's worth taking a chance with that kind of guarantee. I can try it, and if it doesn't look like it's gonna do the job, I can return it for something else.

Are you talking specifically about the Genius wheel the OP mentioned or steering wheels in general that are not as good as the controller?

In general.

I have trued many and am yet to come across one that gives smooth racing experience.

Even the Playseats Classic which was equally disappointing to me.

I personally also prefer the controller, but this purchase isn't about me :)

For me the controller doesn't come close to wheel experience, but as Shane said...

Just got a mail from Esquire. They've got the Thrustmaster Ferrari Challenge wheel for R399 + VAT. Looks like a better buy, and within my budget, so I'm gonna opt for that now.

I use a Logitech G27 on PC. I race on iRacing using a custom built wheel that I contstructed using the Leo Bodnar SLI-Pro. If you are ever in the Centurion area, you are welcome to visit me and test drive my sim rig. I'm sure you will be surprised how well a proper wheel works.
