Hi

I just moved into my newly built house in Stellenbosch. Now to get internet. I have read on this forum many entries about the poor ADSL service in Stellenbosch. So I am trying to find out what the alternatives are

I find it strange that in such a high net worth area, I cannot find any fibre providers.

So, to anyone out there, can you please help me identify the best alternatives to Telkom that actually services Stellenbosch.

From a mobile point of view, I have already tested Telkom Mobile and MTN, no 3G or LTE where I live, but Vodacom works.

I use about 50Gig per month and would like 4Meg or faster line

Currently on 4Meg ADSL line and Afrihost and I could do all I wanted (Somerset West)

Thank you MDE.

We are very cautious about Stellenbosch because of the ridiculous amount amount of interference on Simonsberg.

This is a picture of the over populated tower right next to us. As you can see, they are now even packing antennas on random poles stuck into the ground.

There are four more towers that are worse than that behind the camera.

And yes, that is a generator. We are also running on generator power up there at the moment. A tree fell on a power line leaving half the valley without power.

If Danie is on the "new" side of Stellenbosch, he stands a much better chance of receiving good signal from one of our Bottelary towers.

Thanks guys, but to be honest, the Cape Connect service is just to expensive without guarantee. If you installed as soaked before I had to pay, I could maybe consider it.

And then the monthly rate is double ADSL fees. I know the Telkom factor does have its "opportunity costs" but I personally do not value that at double the price.

Now, is there any Fibre going around / planned for Stellenbosch?

Good luck...highly doubt you'll have fibre any time soon (not knowing where you live).

yeah I for one have been trying and asking all around, but simply no word on FTTH for Stellenbosch, not to mention most areas only have access to 4mb adsl and even then its heavily congested.

You will think one of the richest places in the country per capita and the home of Dark Fibre and some serious alternative internet providers would have targeted the area for Fibre.

Oh well. Applied for a Telkom line today. Installtion lead time is almost as slow as the line speed that they can provide currently (2 - 3 weeks and 4mbs)

I guess when you live in nature's play yard there is no need for serious internet. But you would think that a lot of people are willing to fork out between R650 and R750 per month for decent (+-10mbps) internet in the area. Yet no one is willing to come into the area and service it for that amount. Maybe Telkom will never really go by the way side because of this.

Thanks for those who replied

I beg to differ! If you live in nature's play yard you need much faster internet, otherwise you will be sitting in front of your computer all day waiting for stuff...

If you do a Google search for "Best Internet Stellenbosch" you will see that you are spoilt for choice! A lot of people have worked real hard to bring you choice. You can get 8Mbps uncapped for under R700/month, installed in under a weeks' notice. Granted, there's an installation fee, but if you average it out over a year or two it still beats ADSL or Fiber.

Thanks Dagelf.

I looked at many wireless alternatives, including services like WISH etc. The big problem with them is, yes they charge quite an exorbitant installation fee (equipment included), but the big problem is that they do not guarantee their service. Yes they come and do a site inspection to see if you can "see" their towers, but they are very explicit to say that there is still risk that you might not get quality service when the actual equipment is installed. Plus, what happens if they go out of business the following month, you loose that investment right of the bat.

I rent to own option, with the ability to return if it doesn't work, will mitigate to some extent.

And lastly, there are some of my neighbours' that have WISH installed for example, and they are not all that happy with the quality of the service (not the service from the people - the actual internet service)

So, I am working with fibre providers and are making some (slow) progress while stuck on a fairly predictable 50GB 3G package that had a very low up front investment (R500)
