Students staging a sit-in at Stellenbosch University's JS Gericke Library said they had received feedback from the university assuring them they would be left to continue their demonstration.
A student who chose to remain anonymous told News24 that the university stated on Wednesday night it would not evict the students.
"They have also said they will allow us to occupy Huis Russell Botman if we wish to do that and if we wish to have other people join us, but they are not willing to let people into the library," the student said.
The university did, however, request that the library be allowed to function normally on Thursday. The student said this would not be possible.
"At this stage we are not going to have standard operations."
On Thursday morning, tweets from the scene showed about 10 students and 15 security guards at the library.
The students have insisted on speaking directly to rector and vice chancellor Professor Wim de Villiers.
The sit-in began on Monday when the students entered the library under the banners of #Occupy4FreeEducation and the #SFMFDefianceCampaign.
