“The biggest advantage we have over Android is that you don’t need to be a computer scientist to use a Windows Phone,” he said. “But the cheapest phones will be Android, and we are going to have to look at bringing the cost of our handsets down.”

Wow, so Steve thinks my two kids (10y, 13y) are computer scientists. Wonder what passes as a computer scientist at Microsoft.

Steve Ballmer is Microsoft's Julias Malema. They made him out to be such a douche in the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley.

Ballmer is not the right face for an industry where looks matter. He's the face from 1980's for a computer company from that age. He doesn't inspire. He looks like a bulldog on a chain with nice sexy lady doggies (competitors) walking past ... out of reach. All he can do is bark.

MS needs someone new at the top ... someone fresh with a "now and tomorrow" image. Windows 8 looks great but someone new need to tell us about it.

At least on Android you know where to press to get more options. Windows Phone 7 lacks visual q's to tell you when there is more options, or when you have to long press to do something else.

If the text didnt scroll off the screen you would probably never know that there was a next page either.

Definitely Julias .. promotes simple solutions for the masses as long as he's the one in control of the till.

Hehe. Typical SteveB hyperbole. What he's actually getting across is that Windows Phone 7 is really easy compared to the old-fashioned iOS and Android UI. Paul Thurrot makes a similar point here when comparing WP7 and iOS 5.

There's two sides to every story. In defence of Steve Ballmer - he's done great work at Microsoft. His first overall exec oversight in Dev was for Windows 2000 (Professional and Server), and these were widely regarded as superb quality for their time. We also have him to thank for Windows 7, which is a cleaned-up Vista. He's not everyone's cup of tea (more like a suped-up whirlwind of Red Bull), but he sure gets things done. You might not like his personality, but he has many outstanding qualities as a manager, not the least of which is being able to re-engineer and re-orient the company in a few femtoseconds, relatively speaking.

Lol, over 550000 computer scientists a day are activating their androids.

Man didn't realize there where so many.

The irony is that the exact opposite is true. Windows Phone OS is much more difficult to use than Android.

Wow that was bright, comparing a year old phone to a 2+ year old version. Of coarse iOS5 would suck on 3GS if he wanted to do a proper comparison he should have used iPhone 4 vs his Samsung Focus.

We not saying he is a bad man inside the company, he is just the wrong face for it.

Good point! If his Samsung had been a 6.5 device (from a mere 2 years back) he would have had NO upgrade path to Windows phone 7 or 7.5 whereas Apples as old as the 3G can still run iOS5. Fanboi mentality.

lol, I knew Microsoft would go balls up once Gates left, I'm an apple geek now and my winblows days are behind me :D

Yay! I am a scientist I can use an Android phone :D Thought I will never live to see a White version of Malema lol

Agree. Nobody can argue against his managerial skills. He's the right man on the inside. He can be the real boss, no problem. MS needs a new face that may for all intents and purposes have little to do with the real successes behind the scenes. Who cares if Jobs actually designed anything recently at Apple? That he was "somehow" involved is all people need. He did the talking en he did it convincingly. He was the right person to be associated with the Apple brand. MS should look for something truly fresh and relevant ... no woman CEO possible, for example?

How has Microsoft reoriented in the last 10 years?
