While Apple shifted over 500,000 iPhones this weekend, its partner AT&T didn't keep its part of the bargain. And that's because it couldn't, a research note by DKIB today suggests.

Apple decided against supporting the thoroughly modern 3G CDMA networks used by Sprint PCS and Verizon.

Because Verizon turned them down.
 
I would not get one (if they were available) simply because of the lack of 3G. Such a silly decision from Apple to exclude 3G.

I wouldnt let that deter me too much considering what country we are in. The cost of data would soon overshadow the cost of the phone here!

It was an odd omission none the less.
 
I'm hearing rumours that in Europe and basically the rest of the world the phone will be released with 3g at the very least, if not HSDPA.
 
Folks are underestimating Apple. That phone can be manufactured with anything under the sun for connectivity. When it ships to the rest of the world it will have better connectivity. It must have or it won't sell...

Mmmm say again? Our mobile data is quite cheap compared to the rest of the world. You so patriotic lol!

Ye Vodafone and a few other SPs got the license to sell Iphones in Europe, it "suppose" to have 3G.

I'm not sure how extensive their 3g network is but they do have to cater for phones other than the iPhone as well as laptop cards. I'd settle for unlimited edge over paying what we have to here. Most would.

However - how much is the equivalent iPhone plan in SA?
450 minutes (split it in half if you like)
5000 off peak minutes (you can split that in half too)
unlimited mobile calls (probably terminating on ATT network)
Unlimited Data
200 inclusive text messages?
 
There's very little 3G on AT&T as the article mentions. Verizon and Sprint have 3G networks.

Who CARES about the bloody 3G though? It has WiFi! Much faster!!

you wont always be in a wifi area thats the problem. HSPDA is great for a much larger scale of use. especially unlimited data :)

True but I dont think anyone is even considering that they'd be introducing a non-3g model here.

Too bad wifi isnt more prevalent here - how much do you think vodacom or mtn would charge for an unlimited data account? :o

Ye well Virgin has data for 50c our closest to what they have, I still would not use Virgin data coz its crap. O well im not sure whats their data connections are like.

Is it true that At&t is the old Cingular??
 
Correct me if I am wrong here but most people in the US are more likely to be in a WiFi zone than in a 3g zone.

If that is the case its hardly a problem is it?
 
With people reporting edge speeds of up to 270Kbps I wouldnt say to an unlimited data package for the price ATT (formerly known as Cingular) offers.
