Stocking up on Electricity

Thanks, I have a solar geyser already and it has really worked well for us. We are a family of 5 so the geyser gets used often. I leave the geyser off for weeks some times, depending on the weather of course but through summer its a winner.

Same here. We're saving a lot of money.

In winter (when there wasn't enough sun) and during rainy weather we have to switch it on, but for an hour, but in general we do have enough hot water in winter.

Hi Guys

I say get out your gas braais and make sure your lanterns have good
batteries and your rechargables continuously on charge.

Prepare yourselves for more blackouts

Why do we warn of electricity blackouts on the horizon?

. In the last five years almost no additional electricity has
been added to the Eskom supply system

. Summer has seen problems such as a Koeberg generator not
working, and a floods-caused drop in supply from Cabora Bassa in
Mozambique

. The problems mean that the proper summer maintenance has not
been carried out before the winter overload

. Hundreds of thousands of new homes are being connected to
the already overloaded electricity grid every year

. All this means that the already unstable Eskom system is
even more unstable - more breakdowns and blackouts likely

. No more electricity savings to be had - South Africa
industrial production already cut back (and economy damaged) as Eskom
rations supplies and pays industries not to produce

. To top it all, completion of new Medupi Power Station has
again been much delayed by ongoing strikes and cost overruns

. The blackouts may be planned and you may be warned. But they
may also come as surprises (to you and to Eskom) as overloaded,
under-serviced and aged power generators crash under the weight of the
winter overload.

Being less reliant on the grid is such a good way to go, especially with the rebates. I see they're installing solar geysers on RDP houses.

That looks more like 1 avg persons thoughts than someone with detailed/inside info. e.g. If you want to freak out about something, pick the fact that Nersa scratched Eskoms industrial buyback programs budget...not the summer repair program.

At the moment we are paying a block tarrif so your 1 - 350 units costs like 90cents , 350 - 600 is like R1.10 and i think after that its like R 1.80 , this tarrift resets on the first of each month so essentialy you will not be saving much by stocking up , you will be paying double for you electricity. The key is to purchase like R500 at the start of the month and when it runs out only top up with the minimum amount you will need to get through the month.

Just wait till we all have smart meters and time of use tariffs apply.
