Hi All

I am planning to stock up on electricity to cover the next 3 years. I have spoken to Eskom and they assure me that the tokens do not expire. Mathematically this makes sense due to the huge increses over the next 3 years.

Am I missing anything?

Thanks

Confirm with Eskom that the tokens already entered into a meter that dies are redeemable. You don't want 3 years worth of tokens to go down the drain because your prepaid meters gives in.

Good Point, I will check that, I will also not load them all, just load them as I need them.

Thanks

One thing I can think of is, you would still have to go every month and get your 100 free units.
Other than that, if you have 40k lying around, it seems like a good idea.

Thanks, unfortunatly we do not get free units anymore so that's not an issue. We use R700/month so its about R25K but worth it even if you need to lend it at prime plus 2% you will still save.

Maybe invest in a solar geyser.
I have loaded 6 months into my prepaid meter.
In 3 years, i dont know where i will be.

Thanks, I have a solar geyser already and it has really worked well for us. We are a family of 5 so the geyser gets used often. I leave the geyser off for weeks some times, depending on the weather of course but through summer its a winner.

When do the new prices kick in? 1 April?

I also plan to stock up... at least for the next 6 months..

What happened to the free electricity units? I've been meaning to ask SOMEBODY about it. Haven't been getting any for last 4 months or so..

No not at all, my unit currenty has 2500 units on it, I am not sure what the limit is though

The only hassle is you can only buy in limits of R1000, so standing at the PnP till becomes a bit of a hassle when you are buying a lot. You also get the weird looks and confused onlookers thinking you are bonkers!!

The online sites all have limits per month else I would have bought online.

I have been buying extra electricity every month for the last 6 months. I also bought about 5 times more than I use a couple of days ago. @latdyn can you not buy electricity online or via sms?

Hi

You can buy it online but the maximum I can buy for in a month is R2000 online unless anyone else knows of a site that can approve more. So if you want to buy the amounts I need it not possible, so the tokens are the only route and as mentioned before, PnP can only give you a R1 000 token at a time. I suppose if I had planned better I could have done it over a longer period. I am not sure about the sms though?

I thought there was a 750 unit limit on the pre-paid meters?

I also was under that impression till I loaded 1000 units on my meter without issue. But there are so many different meters out there that it is still possible that some old ones might suffer from this.

I'd get that in writing. As far as I understand it, tokens have a 3 month expiration date from the last token.

Not so sure which metro you fall under but one issue that has popped up here in Cape Town is when guys buy 6mths in advance, then go buy again only to find out that they have to pay for 6mths with of service levies - bit of a shock when you go purchase R600 power only to have R500 deducted for service levies.

But if you have the cash, do it. No other investment will give you this return. Might just be worth it to purchase R100 every month to cover the levies!

Ah wait latdyn, are you purchasing from Eskom or are you purchasing from your municipality? This does make a big difference as each will have its own policey. Here in Somerset West we purchase from the City of Cape Town, but my maid who lives in Maccassar purchases from Eskom - different rates.

But agree on get it in writing..
