stolen laptop - will lastpass help at all?

So i had some tik kids crawl in through a very small window this week - the cat must have been impressed.

Alarm went off and there was no one there 10minutes later when Chubb arrived. Done an audit on the lost stuff and it's dell laptop, acer charger and wireless mouse without dongle gone. well done to them, we both have useless stuff now!

I'm pretty good at backing up data onto dvds, but can't remember if there's anything more i would have liked back! i also have some rather sensitive company info on it..but it's very unlikely to fall into the hands of someone who could use it.

I tried putting prey on it, but without a simcard it actually didn't do anything put another device on the profile. I have lastpass installed but it obviously won't load up unless they log into my profile. I've looked at dropbox and gmail as tools to track IP addresses if they are logged on, but i'm not holding out any hopes.

Any other smart way to trace it, there really should be in this day and age. I've basically written it off.

Is Prey still loaded on the machine? I thought that it also communicates via WiFi?

With the cost of some laptops these days and the invaluable info they could contain, I'm surprised that we don't have a better solution to retrieving/tracking a stolen device.

I doubt there will be Wifi access wherever your laptop ends up.

Not too long ago, I also lost a Dell laptop. It's probably formatted with all serial numbers removed if you ask me...
If I do get another laptop, I'll be sure to add a "honeypot" guest account.

First off, there is software to trace these things, but obviously as you probably know this software would of needed to be installed and ready prior to the theft.

Secondly, you not going to have any hope of tracing their rout if they using an internet cafe or anything with a public gateway to access the internet.

You might be able to trace them on a dongle, phone, or anything with mobile access device they might be using, getting info such as their RICA details etc, but this is quite a long task.

The fortunate part is, like you said there's hardly a chance both these pikinins and their masters will have the slightest capability in using that data with a nefarious intent.

You probably can be rest assured your Windows password for your user account is enough to keep them out lol... I wouldn't bank on it

The only thing you can do is settle with the assumption that they really stupid to do anything with it. And further to prevent future charity cases like this, I will include and advise you to use encryption. Nough said

And no disk encryption? Ouch. Well too late now.

I hope you didn't set lastpass to automatically log in...if yes then you need to change all of the passwords.
