Johannesburg - Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba must stop grandstanding and get on with his job, Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema said on Monday.

"If you go around pronouncing things like you have got power you are going to embarrass yourself," he told reporters.

He advised Mashaba to stop doing so many interviews and get on with his job.

Malema praised Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga.

"That young man in Tshwane, he is just doing his work. He doesn't attempt to become an instant celebrity, but we are monitoring him. We are monitoring everyone because we are the opposition."

He said the EFF had no relationship with the Democratic Alliance and was not in a coalition with the DA.

On August 17, following the local government elections, Malema announced that the EFF would not enter into coalitions with the DA or African National Congress in hung municipalities.

It would instead vote with the DA in Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Nelson Mandela Bay; with the Inkatha Freedom Party in hung KwaZulu-Natal municipalities; and the Forum 4 Service Delivery in Rustenburg.

"You have to behave proper otherwise you will be in trouble," Malema warned Mashaba.

The EFF criticised Mashaba's plans to split waste removal company Pikitup into separate entities and hand them to small businesses.

Malema said his public criticism of Mashaba was proof there was no coalition with the DA.

"If there was a coalition, when Mashaba misbehaves, that would have been subject to underground type of political management and get resolved there.

"We just voted for them to deal with an immediate threat, which was the ANC, and it ended there."

I think someone needs to educate the EFF.. they are not the opposition since they voted these people into their positions. The ANC are officially the opposition.

They're kingmakers, though. All they would have to do is instigate a motion of no confidence, and you can bet your bottom Rand that the ANC will jump at that opportunity.

It grinds me that someone as dimwitted as Malema has this "power".

Is there somewhere a synopsis that explains why the EFF does not like Mashaba?

Without a doubt... but to brand themselves as the opposition is patently wrong..

Then what. Vote for an ANC mayor?

Mashaba is a person who got rich from poverty without state intervention. That is heresy to our commies in overalls.

Mashaba is a self-proclaimed capitalist. There has also been a number of political analysts questioning the DA's decision to make him their mayoral candidate.

Mashaba is a capitalist, and believes BEE is racist.
What's wrong with Capitalism?

EDIT: No worries, here is the answer.

Technically they are part of the opposition. They may not be the official opposition, but they are part of the opposition nonetheless.

Who knows? It could just be a case of giving the DA a bloody nose, and forcing them to recall Mashaba. There are interesting times ahead though.

I agree with Malema. Herman is self-confessed "political rookie". The less he speaks, the better for the DA. Focus on the job at hand and leave public politics to politicians.

Given that they voted for the mayor they can't be part of the opposition....They are part of the minority government.

I disagree. The DA is considered the official opposition to the ANC at the national government level, yet even they voted with the ANC to pass the Employment Equity Bill back in 2013. Zille still came out a few days later and apologised, stating that the party had been "misled" in its decision to vote for the bill.

Except the DA didn't have a hand in voting in the president and his executive. This makes them the opposition.
