Johannesburg - A Bloemfontein store owner shot and killed a suspected robber in his shop at the Emily Hobhouse Square shopping centre on Saturday, police said.

Free State provincial police spokesperson Colonel Sam Makhele said four robbers started shooting at the shop owner in the Sentra mini supermarket in the shopping centre in Bayswater late Saturday afternoon.

"He fired back. One of the suspects approached the office firing and when he reached the door he was shot in the chest," said Makhele.

When the three other men saw their accomplice being hit, they ran away.

"The fourth man also made his way outside and collapsed," said Makhele.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said paramedics found the suspect dead on the scene. A woman who was pistol-whipped was also treated and taken to hospital with minor head injuries.

Makhele said police were searching for the three suspected robbers.

"We are investigating a case of business robbery," he said.

The shop owner was not arrested.

"He acted within his rights to protect himself," said Makhele.

While I don't begrudge you the sentiment, it's a sad state of affairs when we are able to find cause to celebrate the death of another human being.

Don't get me wrong though, if I was the shop owner and they shot at me, I would have happily shot back. Although being a pacifist without a shop or a gun, this is an unlikely scenario.

sorry...

Copatec, it's a different cup of tea when you're in the situation. You can't say how you will react beforehand. Instinct alone dictates whether you become a victim or reactive to the situation.

When I came across 2 guys stealing my mom's car, against the better judgment of staying out of harm's way, before I knew it I jumped them. One ran away thankfully and the other one was ... not so lucky. You have no time to think. Afterwards when the ordeal was over and the cops took him away I was shaking thinking about how bad it could've gone. I dispise violence, but it was a necessary evil at the time.

Of course. As I said, I get this.

You feeling emo today or what? :p

Any dead criminal is cause to celebrate. The more we kill the less there are.

Y The more we kill the less there are.

I agree 100%, I have a lethal weapons hidden in every room in my house, outside on the porch and in the garage. Even got a panga stashed behind the dog kennels. I will not go down without a fight.

For obvious reasons I find it hard to swallow the idea that there is ever a reason to celebrate the death of another human being. There is something fundamentally ****ed in our society that we have to feel this way.

Lucky no human being died. So, hip, hip, hooray!

Crime and killing has always been a part of life. When a dangerous criminal is killed, it makes society that tiny bit safer, which is a perfectly good reason to celebrate. To reduce crime you need to get rid of criminals, we don't owe it to them to look after them all in a prison.

I'm with copacetic here, there is no reason to celebrate, three of them got away.

Copa, when they enter your home with the intent to kill, think again about your sentiment. If someone is willing to take from others the right to live simply in order to rob or out of hatred, in my view he loses his own right to live. I'm glad then when the innocent is victorious, manages to save his own life and protects other innocents in the process.

Not everywhere, no.

I think you guys are jumping to conclusions. I don't disagree with what you wrote there. I simply made the statement that as a society it is very sad that we have reached a point where many of us are gleeful that people died. I am sorry it's not right. I am not saying this to moan at the people who find joy in the death of another, hell, I pretty much echo the sentiment.

It just says something pretty bad about the state of affairs in this country, that's all.

Point taken. Yep, it's sad that we're in a state where we're glad about someone being killed. Imagine a world where everyone respected the lives, belongings, safety, etc.. of everyone around them. Would have been wonderful.

There are indeed countries in the world where this is (for the large part) true.
