There was a huge storm in my area last night. I unplugged my computer only about halfway through the storm. It was working when I unplugged it.... Now this morning it wont switch on.Could this be becausE lightning hit it or something?

Checked all switches? i.e. if you have a multiplug adaptor - is it working?

(power switch on PSU? - I've forgotten that one a few times!)

We're up in the upper highway area, and the storm was very violent. You know it is close when you hear the pre crackle of energy, see the flash less than a second later and hear the roar of thunder with the flash. It was like that last night. Any chance that was you that got struck?

If you had your ethernet cable and telephone plugged in, there's a good chance it was the lightning.

+1

Yip check the back of PSU for switch. Also , If you know what you doing ... clear the CMOS on the mobo.

i live just behind queensburgh station and it was a pretty darn hard storm , had to cover my eyes with a pillow the flashes were annoying ! unplugged the pc's mains and the lan cable so i was saved ..... give your pc parts all a seperate sniff but im guessing if you do have some sort of luck its just static which is easy to sort out. goodluck mate

Could be a surge... but check all the power switches etc first. If it was surge... odds are a new PSU will get it sorted...

i was sitting in the toilet for most of the storm- i had a lot of detoxing to do plus i had a very interesting book to read- luckily my PC seems to be fine- i was afraid that it would get damaged but was unable to do anything until the detoxing was over.
i live in the Phoenix area.

The switches are fine... Thing is, my computer was on when I unplugged it... The router was plugged in to the phone line and my computer, but our router seems to be fine.

I can't smell anything burning.

lol

I lost a router last night night.....

Bloody power surge burnt out the ethernet ports on the router it seems.. so now its a wonderful little box that can connect to the internet but do nothing else.

You realize you don't just need the lightening to strike to cause crap ;). We had a lightening bolt that struck the water tower next to my house, must have been about 20 meters away, but the magnetic pulse from it stuffed over a monitor.

Also, on my sisters pc, when ever there's thunder, you'll see the monitor flicker on and off because of the induced current ;).

Pooky, if you had a decent PSU, that's the only thing to have popped. So don't worry too much. But let this be a lesson to you to always turn off your pc in a storm, SA has violent thunder storms ;)

Um... you have plugged it in again before trying to switch it on ? You did say you unplugged it ... :}

should have unplugged the router and POT Filter and at the mains...

I did switch off my computer as the storm hit (edit: I could not first thing as I was downstairs talking to someone)... it was very sudden. So I don't need to learn a lesson thanks.

Anyway, it somehow miraculously turned on when I tried it this afternoon, which is pretty weird.

Not weird. Used this SOP in my workshop, while based in Limpopo (lots of electric storms). Unplug all the cables from the PC, push and hold power button for 10 seconds. Plug everything back and most of the time it will start up. The procedure "release the static" on the MOBO.

LOL - I still maintain that Pooks 4got to put plug in wall before posting ! ;)
