Storm in joburg

hi

how bad was the storm in joburg, someone i know spent a hour on the runway, as the storm was to bad to fly in.
 
Northern JHB (Sandton Rosebank) the lightning was very bad, not that much of rain in this area.
 
didn't rain at all in South Joburg.. just a few splatters... but lotsa lightning.
 
odd, my dad has just landed he had to spend a hour on the ground because of a storm, and the pilot had to do some creative moves once they where in the air.

Maybe not at the airport - possible an area that they had to fly through. I can assure you that I have been at home (which is a few kms from ORTambo) and there was nothing more than a few spells of drizzle and I could count the lightning flashes on one hand.

I could almost swear ORTambo is built in a rain belt. I work in Glen Marais and taking the Voortrekker road turn off to get there I drive past the airport and if it's over cast and raining in or around the PWV, it is always pissing down just there. Same with the road running past Athlone girls in Bez Valley, rain belt for sure...

East Rands not too bad, bit of a culture shock at 1st but not too bad, one does acclimatize...

**** I hope the house wasn't inherited from a deceased relative... That would be rather insensitive of me...:sick:
 
Airports and storms...

Coming from Hartbeespoort, going to Lanseria to pick up my dad. As you leave the twists and turns of broederstroom you see a major part or western and northern jhb.

The lightning was a thing of beauty to behold. A bolt would crack in the north and travel all the way to fourways and beyond sight. This would be happening the whole time criss-crossing each other. Every now and then there would be a massive lightning bolt so bright you could see road outside clearly as you drove.

Really wish I had a camera to take some pictures.. I wouldn't have to have waited for 'the shot', my finger would have been holding the button in..

A thing of beauty...

Maybe it was the area they had to fly though. All we get in the southern cape is this persistent Drizzle. if it rains

It is well known that a requirement for an area to be chosen as an airport that there has to be a high prevalance of wind sheer.

Actually, it should be a surprise as airports tend to be built in places where people don't live. And they don't live there for a reason. I think in the case of Joburg was because it was a wetland.

That's quite interesting, I always thought high wind sheer was dangerous for aircraft either taking off or landing...

I can believe it's a wetland, always teaming down with rain on the R24, parallel with the airport, for about 300metres and then dry...
