Hi guys and gals,

So I have a stove and a hob (both electric) built into my unit in the kitchen, 600mm, which is kinda tiny, but I don't need much space.

I've been looking to switching to gas, and was surprised to easily find a gas hob 600mm quite easily, but was wondering if there is a gas stove counterpart.(undercounter)

I'm not really looking to rip up the counters/destroy the marble or redo it. Just replace it.

To give you an idea of what kind of hob/stove I have: https://www.makro.co.za/search/result-311669EA

Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

Apparently gas stoves are rubbish according to people I have spoken to, haven't tested one myself.

But I can say replacing the hob will be worth it.

Agreed, baking with gas is a nightmare. Just replace the hob.

The knobs on your oven unit can be disconnected

Most pro-chefs use gas, but then again, they probably have nice stoves.

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking about replacing my oven as well because I don't think it's really good (no elements, makes me wonder if the previous owner ripped it out or whatever, sometimes leaks at the door if steamed up etc.

Since it's undercounter, I can probably replace it with a bigger oven bit and sacrifice cupboard space? (cupboards on either end)

Gas cooker , with undercounter oven.

Most of the built in ovens seem to be 600mm nowadays, and many are A or A+ power rated which is a bonus.

We have a 900mm gas hob and 600mm electric oven unit at home. 900mm oven units are much more expensive than 600mm ones and you have to ask yourself if you need the extra space?

Rather get higher quality 600mm oven than a "cheap" 900mm one. Plus look for energy efficiency, you can save a ton in the long run :)

I'm still leaning towards a gas stove though lol. but I will shop around and see how/what/where/when etc. Not planning on doing a lot of baking, but if it was that crap, then why even make it.

Will see, maybe start with a hob only and go from there.

Thinking SMEG... any preference in makes? And no, not Defy... I don't like Defy.

You're confusing us all. We're all in agreement gas stove is the way to go. You're wanting a gas oven - that's where we differ. The issue with gas ovens is that (apparently) it's very difficult to regulate the heat which is essential for baking.

Gas hob, electric oven..

In terms of brand, SMEG, Elba, AEG, Bosch (the higher end versions) are all decent.

BTW, in this country stove and hob are generally used interchangeably. Hob is usually in reference to the stove aspect of the Oven/Stove combo units.

Your oven carcass is 600mm, it would be a bigger job to change that and the adjacent cupboards, is a bigger oven really worth it?
Also I see you mention granite, if you go for a bigger 900mm Hob then that will need to be cut for the new size as well.

The gas line must be installed by a certified installer and signed off etc.

I've just replaced the hob like the one in the link. Just beware the gas hob is slightly longer. So measure carefully.

check dimensions
of hole size . A 750mm hob could maybe fit in a 600mm hole

If he's extremely lucky.

Mostly it's the front to back dimension that gives hassles and have seen it happen numerous times just with electric to electric hob swap outs.

Also @Op don't forget the wall cupboards if you have any.

yer, that's what I meant.

Stick with an electric oven, there's plenty specials on convection ovens at the moment.

My inlaws bought a smeg, it looks nice but its not great. The oven takes years to warm up which is a pain and it carries on running the thermofan for about 15 minutes after you turn it off. The gas top is ok though, nothing special, just ok.
