Straight 6 or V6...

Powerwise? Sound from the exhaust?

People say the straight 6 revs smoother the the V6. I remember my father had a cressida GLi-6, which reved so smooth people always asked if it was an automatic.

So are the pros and cons of the two engines designs?

BMW 328 = Straight 6
Ford cortina = V6

They sound exactly the same to me

Both are great and each has it's own packaging advantages/disadvantages but I would definitely go for a straight six.

Straight six is also the smoothest of the two because of the in-line configuration of the cylinders and you can definitely feel it.

Just have a look at any BMW strainght six engine and two of the most incredible engines of all time, the Toyota 2JZ-GTE (Supra) and Nissan RB26DETT (Skyline R32-R34) All these engines can easily be tuned to far over 1000HP (750Kw)

Have a look at the following and enjoy a EAR-rotic orgasm :-)

thanks bro:):D

I say V6 sounds better a V6 engine will have more of a rumble compared to a straight 6 which is smoother.

As for power delivery, im not sure.

My BMW 323 is a 2.5 inline 6, but BMWs do sound different than other manufacturers though. As for power, they say it revs smoother, but I've got no proof of that, because these days engines run smoothly anyway.

I heared a Sup'd up XR6 Cortina the other day, sounded just like a Beemer. Might just be me though. To me they sound the same :o

Well then the BMW you are comparing the Cortina to must also be souped up, because both of them must then be fairly noisy!

Power == EXACTLY the same.

The main advantages are in smoothness and center of gravity

Inline/Straight 6: Inherently balanced in all configurations which is why it's smoother. Also because of the balance, the crank can usually be pretty light weight and it can rev higher with much less effort. Perfect example of a kick-ass I6 BMW N52. Downside is it can be pretty long.

V6: Both primary and secondary imbalances (it's 2x I3 engines), and cannot be balanced with balancing shafts or any type of angle/configuration which is why it's less smooth. That also puts a damper on rev limit and the power it can make. Upside is it's a very compact package, in terms of space, for example you can fit a V6 into a Corsa that usually takes a I4 engine but no way will a I6 fit there.

The straight 6 (and combinations thereof, such as the V12) are in perfect balance, and are thus the smoothest engines around.

Straight 6 and V6 do sound slightly different. As mentioned by someone else already (JK8), the V6 does have a bit of a gruff rumble to it. The straight 6 has a more... um.... "smoother" (think "turbine") sound. Hard to describe it. Both sound awesome though.

In terms of power and torque, there's no difference in their potential.

The V6's crankshaft can handle more torque as it is the shorter of the two and thus can greater torsional rigidity, but we're talking ridiculously large amounts of torque here. e.g. the 335d (straight 6) handles 580 Nm on its crankshaft, so it's not like the the straight 6 crankshaft can't handle enough torque, it's just that the V6 crankshaft can handle more, in theory.

but for a big car a straight 6 should be a better option since space isn't a problem
This is the other thing; most 6 cylinder cars tend to be V6 due to the fact that it is physically smaller than a straight 6. But like Pyro said, on bigger cars it doesn't matter as they have enough real estate under the bonnet.

Purely subjective there. Listen to a BMW 330i drive past slowly (i.e. low revs)... heaven to any petrolhead.

My favourite engine sounds all emanate from various V angles. Maybe it results in a more dynamic frequency than a smooth inline. A more complex sound gives a more satisfying result. A boxer gives a unique sound as well.

Your exhaust and intake has a lot of influence on the sound, but the geometry makes it unique.
