Is it not nice to see how SAA is handling problems?
Stranded passengers at OR Tambo International Airport were threatened with arrest this morning if they did not leave the airport.
Approximately 50 SAA passengers bound for Heathrow Airport grew angry when they were informed that there were still no planes flying out. Airport management then asked the people to leave the airport, where some people have been camping for a few days.
"They said we must go back to our hotels or another part of the airport where we won't be visible," said Amanda Damms, who was due to leave for the United Kingdom on April 17.
When the passengers refused, they were allegedly told that the police were on their way and they (passengers) would be arrested.
To calm the crowd down, hand-written lists were drawn up detailing who should have flown out when. But passengers said similar lists were drawn up yesterday to no avail. Some have been waiting for days. Some said their visas had expired. Others were running out of medication.
"They haven't given us any information about when we're flying out," said Heather from Birmingham. "Why can't our government send some planes to help us?" Nobody there knows about us our situation."
All passengers said SAA had been unhelpful with giving them information. One woman approached the counter to ask about flights to Germany. She was cut off by an official who said they were dealing with heathrow only and there would be no extra flights to Frankfurt or Munich.
SAA spokesperson, Fani Zulu, denied the allegations, saying: "I was at the terminal building and no one used such language." He said they had asked the passengers to move to another room so SAA could offer them refreshments.
