Hi,

I got ADSL recently (been working fine since tuesday, 13 june). Today I left the PC for about an hour and came back, and the Internet connection didn't work anymore. I checked the modem/router (Billion 5102S), and the ADSL & PPP lights were off, indicating there is no synchronization happening. After three hours, there was still no connection. So I decided to phone Telkom Tech support. Then as soon as i started talkin to the guy, I realised a connection had been established. I told the guy everything was working now and hung up. As soon as I put the phone down, the modem/router lost synch again. waited for another hour, and there was still no synch. Then I decided to phone M-Web tech support. Then as I spoke to that person, the modem/router synched again. After hanging up, synchronization was lost again. Then I realised if i take to phone off hook, i get a synch, but the connection is not very stable. The phone I'm taking off hook is connected to a Telkom POTS microfilter. During the week I had a constant connection with no problems at all.

The log from the modem/router is as follows:
1/1/2000 0:33:9> SNMP TRAP 2: link down
1/1/2000 0:33:9> MPOA Link Down
1/1/2000 0:33:9> mpoaChannDown: ch<0> null iface

1/1/2000 0:35:27> Accept() fail
1/1/2000 0:35:27> Accept() fail

Anybody know what can be done? Any help will be appreciated...

still nothing

OK, I tried a different POTS filter, but that didn't make any difference. I noticed that in the morning when i wake up, there is no connection anymore (synchronization lost). Then I go & pick up the phone, and volia, I get a connection. Later during the day i can put the phone down without loosing the connection. I have phoned telkom and they tested the line from their side and said everything looks fine. The modem/router is configured for a permanent connection.

what happens if you unplug the phone?

also, are there any surge protectors etc in the "loop"?

Sounds then, like something has gone wrong with your telephone itself, so that it is now severely interfering with the line when it is on-hook, and to a lesser extent when it is off-hook. You could also try disconnecting it completely for a while to test the stability of your connection. Do you have another handset to try? Is this the only thing that you have attached to that line?

I am having the same problem, its been like this from friday. The modem wont connect(and stays on the blue icon in the corner)with the data light flashing, but it will then only connect when i lift the phone, and by putting it down i lose all connection.

A telkom Tech person will be coming today(i hope)so ill post here if he can help!

can you tell us if unplugging the phone works? What other equipment is there?

Ok, i have taken the phone line out of the wall(the phone line connected to the ADSL pots filter) and it just now disconnected. It reconnects when i pluged it back in.

The line connects the phone to the ADSL pots filter and then to the jack in the wall, ubove that the adsl line comes out which is connected to the ADSL protected output(i think this is the lighting output)which is then connected to modem in turn connected via USB to the back of the computer.

I have also just tried swapping the spare USB pots filter with the old one but it still disconnects when the phone is not lifted.

Thanks alot for trying to help:)

Probably all part on a new plot. This is stage 1 of a two part program developed by Telkom Logic (TM).

Part 2 will involve establishing a dial up connection to a 0861 number, for the length of time you wish to use ADSL. Caps will however be increased to 3.1GB (a 24% increase - Telkom Maths (TM) ).

Hi all.
Thanks for your replies.
If I unplug all the phones, I get no connection at all. The ADSL light usually flashes 3 or 4 times, then stays off for a while. This process is then repeated. Currently I do not have and surge protectors installed. Using another handset produced the same results. I have also noticed that when the modem synchronizes, the ADSL light flickers every now and then.
And yes, when I connect to the internet using a normal dial-up modem, the ADSL modem/router synchronizes.
So I guess I should call out a Telkom Technitian as well...

Before you do through the pain of waiting for a Telkie, try another router or ADSL modem - just on the off chance.

Seems Fine

turns out the alarm system was connected to the phone line as well... i disconnected the alarm system, and everything is fine now...

So where do you live ???? ;).

Seriously ... get a radio link for your alarm ... much more reliable and can't be sabotaged.

Hey the same thing happened to me. They had to send some tech out to replace all the outside wiring. They told me it was caused by water damage to the line. Tell them this, That you dont want them to test anything. You want them to replace the line from the box to your house. It seemed to fix everything for me. Get them to run a test on every connection point outside the house. By connection points every where that the line, connects into a box and moves on from there. Will take some photos of such points in the morning, so that you can get an understanding of what i mean.

Worth remembering!

Anyways, as said by someone else, go for the radio link. Telkom charge you for the calls to the security company....

Also, if you have overhead wires, they can be cut.
And if the line gets a fault, Telkom will send someone to repair around 2010, during which time the alarm will not work.

Best to have both, you cant use alert buttons like fire, ambulance and that from your keypad if you only have a radio link, also the alarm company can't tell which sensor caused the alarm to go off.

Also make sure your alarm is plugged into a POTS filter, and get a radio link as a backup, it's only about R600 and the alarm company wont charge you extra for monitoring.

actually the alarm uses a radio link to contact the armed response. it was connected to the telephone line to nofify me via cell once the alarm gets set off. by disconnecting it from the line, i will no longer get notified, but armed response will....

Hi there..

I've got the exact same problem. Have you found the solution to your problem yet?

If you read the rest of the thread you'll see the problem was that the alarm was connected to the same line as the ADSL.

or you can just surf while taking on the phone.. haha rofl

yeah most alarm companies make their connection like that so that when it dials it forces a disconnect and then dials unobstructed from handsets. I wonder what model of equip it is that cause your problem since mine works fine till the alarm modem dials(since it goes direct thru line/no filter).
