I've had my V3G Card for about 4 months now, and I've been pretty happy with it since day one. As a matter of fact, my installation was as stable as I could wish, and I seldom, if ever, had any disconnects.

About a month ago I upgraded my Dash to V5, and also installed the latest firmware on my Novatel card. At first everything seemed stable, but now things are a bit wobbly, to say the least.

Other than upgrading the dash and firmware, I haven't changed a thing. I haven't moved onto the 64k sim yet, as the Vodacom guys suggested I stay with the old sim as I wasn't having any problems. No I am, and may just change to the 64k sim to see what happens - it can't get much worse, can it?

The symptoms are as follows: When the software starts, everything seems fine. I connect okay, despite only having 2 out of 5 bars of 3G signal. I've always had only two bars, so that doesn't bother me much. However, after anything between 5 minutes and half an hour, my card displays all three LEDs at once, and the connection dies.

I then have to kill the Dash process, unplug the card, plug it in again and restart the Dash. Sometimes the Dash says "Connecting" but then doesn't connect at all (I've left it on for hours to see what happens, but it just hangs).

This is particularly annoying when sending or receiving photographs - which, as a photographer, is pretty much all I use my connection for. Anyway, I'd appreciate any help - even if it is just to try the 64k sim!

Oh, and al of this happens in my fairly old Compaq Presario 2700 laptop, which always sits in exactly the same place.

Same problem. but on the Option card. I phoned Vodacom, and they are going to test my tower (Vredekloof 3).

Let's pray. I used to love my 3G (hence my name), but it has become so troublesome that I am now advicing people not to go for 3G, as I feel the technology is not stable yet.

Well, at least it seems to be a problem with the service, rather than our specific equipment. At the moment, though, it is utterly rediculous - 5 minutes of up-time if I'm luck!

I'm going to try the new sim tonight. Which sim are you using 3GDM?

Just spoke to the guys at 155, who suggested that I use only the "3G ONLY" profile - apparently the "3G PREFERRED" profile *may* cause some instability. However, I haven't seen any improvement in my connectivity yet!

I am using the 64k SIM. V3G, I will try the connection tonight. Was there a problem that you guys could find? They also told me to use the 3G ONLY profile.

Vodacom3G, I tested it last night, and now my connection is flying!!!!

The dash actually reported a top download speed of 388kbps.... which is more than the supposed max.

I am so glad that it's sorted, that I will have a tequila on you guys tonight.

Cheers

Coincidence

Sorry to bud in here guys, but I just noticed something very interesting :D

I am currently on iBurst, investigating 3G as a second/primary connection. iBurst has been experiencing problems roundabout the same time that these posts originate, as well as the confirmed resolution.

Totally useless info, I know, I just find it interesting :D

If anybody cares, my connection seems perfectly stable again all of a sudden. Touch wood, but I've had an up-time of nearly 5 hours so far...

I'm still using my old sim, so it must've been something on the local tower.

Got that twice. Once, I was busy downloading an email (54 MB broken up in pieces). When I got back to my laptop the link was dead and all 3 LEDs were on. So far everytime I had to remove the card and restart everything. (All new stuff loaded, dash and firmware)

I have also found the 3G connection in my area (Midstream Estates) very slow and unstable. Same location, everything the same. I went to a game farm over the weekend and got excellent comms there, so it is location based again.

VMS, I'm also in MS Estate ... not really what I wanted to hear, as I was considering getting 3G.

PM me about the Vodacom tower being used in MS ...

VMS and LandyMan

Ask Vodacom3G to test the tower. Over a period of 5 months, my 3G connection just died. I was very happy with the connection, but it became so bad that I couldn't even connect. After using Vodacom 3G newspaper ads as targets when ever I needed to throw stones at something, the fault was traced by Vodacom3G to be a tower problem. It is now very very fast. The connection still drops, but it's not nearly as bad as before.
