So I have a new ADSL installation at my office, I got the SMS to say it is ready for self install. Great.

I brought my router from home, which was working perfectly (D-LINK 2540U). I had it configured to run as both a router and a bridge (so I could connect PPPoE directly on my PCs).

Anyway, as expected it synced up as soon as I plugged it in, dialup worked etc, but couldn't access any websites, except the telkom one. I assumed this was so I could do the verify adsl first. So I completed the online verification process, it worked no problem, said my line would be 'active' in 30 minutes. That was 24 hours ago.

Now the line still works, I can connect any one of my WebAfrica, Telkom Internet or M-Web accounts either on the router or directly on my PC, but they all have the exact same problem.

No internet access, after doing a traceroute all packets get dropped after the first hop. I have attached some of the trace outputs below (I have done it from direct PPPoE connection to eliminate router problems). I have tried the trace on multiple computers (Mac/Windows) and also used 2 differnet routers to test, still no joy, EXACT same symptoms. Has anyone experienced this? What is the solution?

Thanks.

M-Web trace:

If you can access the Telkom website, but no other websites, then it means that the ADSL verification failed or didn't go through.

Btw, do you get those trace route results when dialing the PPPoE connections from your PC too?
Can you do DNS lookups? Can you ping like www.take2.co.za?

If you can access the Telkom website, but no other websites, then it means that the ADSL verification failed or didn't go through.

That's what I thought as well, I called Telkom to check it, they said it was fine?

I'm also suspicious as to how/why they would block other accounts too (WebAfrica, etc) but my knowledge of ATM/PPPoE isn't enough to start questioning whether they have the ability to do that :)

It is not entirely ATM/PPPoE that is your problem. It seems you get on to the IPC part, but not past that to the actual ISPs.

I have seen this 1 to 2 times before. You will have to call up telkom and tell them it seems your adsl line can dial up, but is blocked from doing traffic on any ISP even on accounts that are not capped. What I don't know, is what the correct terminology for this is, as its a specific setting on telkom's side, as if the line is blacklisted from doing traffic until telkom enable it on IP level (layer 3) to do traffic.

Call Telkom again, that or you have a routing/pc problem if you cannot get past your own router.
