I got myself a new Netgear DG834PN ADSL Router today, after some fiddling I got it configured and connected to my ADSL line, however I'm seeing a very strange redirect issue with the router.

All URL's are simply redirected to the routers configuration page, i.e. if i type in www.google.com I get the Router Configuration wizard, the same applies to any other URL.

If I Manually set the DNS Server setting in the IP configuration on my Network Card, instead of relying on DNS then I can browse just fine.

In other words if I let the router act as a DNS gateway it resolves any address to 192.168.0.1, but if I bypass it by setting DNS settings everything is working.

has anyone else seen anything like this?

Hi,

has this been solved? I have exactly the same problem. Everything seems to be setup correctly, network traffic is routed correctly, and connecting to IP adresses works fine, but when I set the Netgear as my DNS Server, it redirects everything to routerlogin.com.

I can of course set a different DNS server manually on every client, but that would defeat the purpose of dhcp. And it doesn't seem to be possible to tell the Netgear's builtin DHCP server to serve a different DNS server IP to it's clients than it's own.

Any ideas? There must be something I do wrong, as obviously this cannot be the behaviour others are experiencing.

The only thing I can think of, that I had to override the assistant (it did'nt detect anything useful for me) and directly setup everything by going to http://192.168.0.1/basicsetting.htm directly (That was after a full reset). I guess the Netgear thinks, it's setup is not yet completed, and that's why it redirects everything. But how can I convince it to stop that behaviour? (Yelling at it didn't help :) )

Thanks,
Marc

Hi all,

thanks for the reply. Well, warranty is not much of a concern for me. But the site you are mentioning is constantly unreachable.

Can anyone who didn't use the assistant confirm that they are NOT seeing the behaviour I described?

Thanks,
Marc

Hi,

I solved my problem, although the solution is completely ridiculous.

As it turns out, the installer insists on completing the setup all by itself. If it doesn't, it thinks the connection is not working, and enforces this DNS redirect, even though you have already configered everything manually. There is no setting anywhere to turn that behaviour off, although you can configure everything else, and the connection was actually working fine.

As the assistant just wouldn't grok my connection at work, what I did was to take it home, let it recognize the connection there, which it did successfully, then took it back to work, and reconfigured everything to fit my work setup. It's working fine now.

Isn't that completely stupid :-)

Greetings,
Marc

Moral of the story?

Dont use the setup disks for the routers at all.
Just configure it manually.

I have setup hundreds of netgear routers in my time(all done manually)
And I have never had this problem.
Especially if it isnt a SA product

I don't understand. That's what I wanted to do. I never talked about setup disks, I don't even have one. I did a full reset, and then configured everything manually, but it didn't work. As I described.

Mine is a MR814v2.
