Strange phone call to do with Microsoft

My mum received a phone call a short while ago. The lady on the other end says "I would like to speak to Mr *(our surname)*". When my mum asked what is this about, the lady then said " You have a Microsoft system installed in your home". My mum found it very odd like who is this person, where did they get our phone number, how they know our surname and why are they asking about Microsoft. Anyway, my mum cut the call short.

I later checked and the number the call came from was: 001800180200

It must be some sort of scam, did anyone else also receive this phone call? Im curious to know what did they want.
 
Next time they phone just keep them on the line for as long as you can and then tell them you know their scam and they must go die alone in the ganges.
 
They also called [again] this morning. Think this is the fifth call this past year.
I usually either a)keep them going or b)tell them I'm using Linux and get the phone slammed in my ear.

They're also using this number for credit card scams.

Guy who phoned me claimed to be from VISA card division querying a suspect transaction and wanting my card details :wtf:

... gave him a rude reply and hung up.
 
Was it a land line call? I've only heard of these guys phoning landlines.
 
I got a call last week, asked for me in person, what I'd like to know is where are they getting that information from as I've never had my number listed
 
Do you guys that got the call all have dsl? Someone suggested that they only phone people with dsl...
 
we received a similar call at our office. Being an IT company, it was a big laugh. The guy told me that they have detected a virus on my Windows system, and I must please get infront of my windows computer so he can help me remove the virus. We then passed the phone around to waste his time, some of the responses we gave was:

1. "sorry, I run linux, please hold for the appropriate person"
2."eeehhhh boss, I do not have a computah, please hold"
3."are you phoning from a microsoft outsourced call centre situated in india?"
etc...

He did however not know any of our details, think he was just taking a chance
 
Lol yeah I get the same calls, I always ask them if they like their jobs, and ask them if they've heard of PRISM, :-P tell them you know there location and you have a special set of skills, and you will find them. Its Hilarious, bunch of Tards :-D
 
My neighbour got hit by these scammers over the weekend. Knew her serial for Windows. Apparently they got her to let them remote access her PC. They must have had a hell a lot of patience though as she is still on Dial up :whistle:
