I have a 9700 so I know how to get everything working, but my friend is having drama...

9700 on standard Vodacom OS 5 release, with BIS activated and working.

Vodacom had the phone and cant help. They even called BB and tried to sort it out but that also failed....

I've done a battery pull. Done a soft reset. Un-installed BB App World and re-installed it. Changed the APN setting (and back again)

Basically, when you click on BB App World it opens fine. You can connect and browse goodies to download. You click on something, and asks if you wanna download...

(ok I might have the order wrong here, but dont think its relevant)

You click download and it comes up with the terms and conditions, you click accept.

It then asks for the username and password to access BB App World, it comes up saying authorising and then it just comes up with the your account screen.

Gives you the option to "change password" and "security question" and accept future emails from RIM or something. So you can click and do WHAT YOU WANT but it will not continue and actually DOWNLOAD the item.

I've tried everything I know... nothing works.

Any ideas

Its a problem with appworld itself, the only known fix is the 2.1 private beta which us south africans cant get into or using a previous version.
I suggested to someone with the same problem to register on the appworld site instead of the phone and then just login with the already active credentials but no idea if that worked.

So I've been googling this problem. These are the things you could try as well:

1) Update the phone software with desktop manager

but more likely:

2) Load at least one app through your computer browser. Goto appworld and load the browser plugin. Future installation of apps should then work on the phone.

A friend had this exact same problem. I saw her a week later and unfortunately for us on the forum, her problem just went away on its own so I dont know what changed

Remove appworld with the BB desktop manager software and reinstall appworld with the desktop manager software. When this is done appworld will work without password, etc.

Just to confirm this solution, it worked for me. Basically as said above:

1) Go onto the appworld web site via the internet on your computer.
2) Complete the registration process (it will get to a step where you must plug your phone into the computer for THEIR Step 2).
3) Complete that part of the registration and your problem should be fixed.

Now with me, everytime I click 'download' it asks me to log in but the difference after doing the above is that it progresses one step closer to downloading a program before it asks me to login again. Eventually (after maybe three logins) it will allow me to download the application. It's a pain in the ass but it's better than NOT having appworld at all which I went through since like October last year.
