I recently re-installed windows (xp sp2) from scratch and re-installed my main apps and games etc
one of the main apps i installed was avast 5 (i had avast 4 previously) now for some reason my games don't launch... every time i double clicked the game icon it would start up but would fail to launch completely. so i gave up and stopped trying for months until yesterday i double clicked the icon and it worked ! the game launched perfectly.....i tried to play again later on that day and it didn't work again :(

i think the problem might be avast 5, i stopped the program for 10 min (it's part of the features) and launched the game and it worked ! but alas when i tried it again it never work :( i tried stopping avast and then launched the game but no effect, it just doesn't launch... i added the game file as part of the exception on avast's file system shield but that doesn't work ...

so what going on ? why does the game launch sometimes and mostly doesn't ?

firewall is off, i have 2.5gb ram, intel Q9820 cpu i think (the quad one) and 450w psu with about 3 internal drives. graphics card is Geforce 9500gt 512mb using a hdmi cable (all drivers are up to date using driver genius prof)

Any idea whats going on ? is it avast and if so what can i do to stop it messing with my game without uninstalling it ...

Edit: The avast is the registered home edition (5)

does mse pick up that it might not be an original xp copy ? i don't want to run the pc without avast cos it's always connected to the net, it worked again this morning without doing anything to avast ....

Yes you need to validate windows before install...

well i guess that rules out that suggestion :p

i'll keep trying to play around with the avast settings and see if i can work some magic else i'll uninstall avast and install another anti-virus and see if that works ...

Its generally referred to as Application Control, which describes pretty much what its doing: controlling what applications are allowed to launch. There is probably something along those lines in Avast 5, so might be a good place to start looking...

i run avast5 (and 4) on plenty pc's and have never experienced a problem like that. unlikely cause imho.

ok don't think it's avast anymore...i've disabled it and the problems still exist ...

not sure what else it could be ... the only other thing i can think off that could be causing it is maybe daemon tools ?

i can't uninstal that because it's not showing up on add\delete programs ... any ideas ?

maybe i should just re-install from scratch ?
