I have 384kb DSL at home with 2 telephone points. Both telephones are cordless and have the filters in place.

Funny thing is when I pick up the phone I don't get a dialtone and when I call my home number from my cell it sounds like the phone is off the hook.

All looks OK and Telskum will take 15 days to resolve.

Any help would be appreciated.

Does your ADSL work?

Plug out everything - phones, routers, filters etc. Wait a few seconds, plug one phone back in and pick up the handset immediately. If you get a dialtone, then the problem is with one of your phones/filters & you should be able to sort it out through trial and error.

If after the above you still have no dialtone, then you either have a wiring problem somewhere between your wall socket and the exchange, or Telkom simply "forgot" to to supply you with a voice service. If your ADSL works, its probably the latter. In both cases though, you'll probably need to wait for Telkom :(

ADSL works fine but the phones are buggered. I have unplugged everything except 1 phone and also removed the filter. I still get the same problem.

It was working up until I went on holiday on the 20th december, the person that house sat my house unplugged stuf and didn't plug it back in properly. I have since tried all combo's to no avail.

Maybe I should get another phone and test just in case the 2 handsets are blown.

Good idea.

I have had the same problem on my normal line and phoned and reported the fault 3 times. Then all of a sudden I get a dial tone and telkom phones and asks if line Ok. Things fixed without Telkom coming out. So Your guess is as good as mine. I have the same phones as you

I have had a similar problem ... from what I gathered, its a problem at the exchange ... something with how they installed the dslam .... which is y they don't need to come out to your house ..... took them a couple of tries, but they eventually got mine fixed.

ADSL can work with one leg disconnected

Yeah disconnect eveything even ADSL router, double check all over the house, get another normal phone and plug this up directly without filter, if still not working, Telkom must fix it.

PLEASE note that ADSL can work with one leg dis, seen this many times, the one leg of the twisted wire is disconnected your phone will die, but ADSL will carry on, wierd. Check your ADSL connection in your actual router, are there errors, does it keep dropping, usually one leg dis will degarde the ADSL performnce. Also what could have happened is the jumper is pulled from the DSLAM to the actual phone port, ADSL will still work, but not phone, they will simply just need to re-connect this.

What happens sometimes is that the jumper is pulled off accidently or mixed up with another job and they pull the jumper, in the exchange you get a massive frame called the MDF with thousands of lines coming in, the MDF guy or external tech simply comes in, re-connects, phones you and there you go, we use to love these flts, we would book an hour on this for a 5min job brilliant, then drag our selfs off to fix a pole feed flt that really sucks.

Thanks guys, funny thing is Telkom phoned me yesterday at home on the phone that "was" broken wanting to know when they can come around and fix it... DOH

I think it's an ID10T probloem;)
