Having a problem with my wireless network (not the internet connectivity). I have a linksys wag120n. The problem seemed to happen spontaneously, which is what is throwing me off. Like I say, internet connectivity is not the problem, as connecting directly via the Ethernet port works. However my laptop refuses to connect to the router, and my Android phone connects, but then immediately disconnects (repeat).

Coincidentally this occurred post the maid being at home. My only (uneducated) guess is that she must've dropped it and somehow affected the wifi signal.

1. I've tested the wifi strength and that doesn't seem to be an issue.
2. Internet works via direct connection.
3. I have factory reset the router (still no change).

What now?

Can't say i've had that problem with the 120N, it's a great Modem but updating firmware is always the best bet.
I have had other issues with it, that come about after a few months, like in your case, but never Wifi problems...

My first step would be to update firmware here: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/EU/en/support/WAG120N/download

If you dont come right, then come back to us after your firmware update...

Agree with upgrading firmware. Not sure if this could be happening to you, but I had a similar issue with another brand of wireless router. The signal kept dropping randomly, but would be a-ok after a few minutes. It turned out to be a power issue, moved the router to a different plug with a UPS, and never had that issue again. I'm guessing that was a completely random issue, a flux!

Thanks. I did do that already last night. Seemed to have solved the problem somewhat, but I haven't tested it on my laptop yet.

Yup also moved the plug. Figured there might have been a surge yesterday, since I noticed last night the hardware self check failed (flashing red power burn). Don't know why I didn't see that before. So it might be to late. But upgrading the firmware stopped the failure notification. But that might just be superficial.

I'll test with my laptop tonight. I have noticed that even though my phone is connecting better, i'm still getting dropped, add if the wifi range had suddenly been reduced.

I've used wifi analyzer to try and see what the signal strength does. If all of this doesn't work, i'm just going to have to replace it.

Thanks

Tested the connection with just the Android phone, and the connection lasts maybe 2 min at a time.

When I try to connect simultaneously with the laptop, then the connection drops repeatedly.

I don't have a UPS to check if maybe its a power issue, but my suspicion is that somehow the power conditioning circuit on the router is kaput.

Will google a bit more, and then if no solution comes up, i'm just going to have to replace it. :(

For the purpose of contributing to spiritus mundi :)

I initially thought it might have something to do with interference - my mind jumped to sun surface activity (too many scifi flicks). But more likely (and something I didn't properly consider) is that some other Ghz signal could be interfering with my network. The reson I overlooked this, was WiFi analyzer did not show any other networks around. Anyway, a little googling revealed that I could change the network band that the router broadcasts on.

So I changed the WiFi channel from 7 (2.442 GHz) to 11 (2.462 GHz), and the problem seems to be resolved. Fingers crossed.
