Howdy,

Are there any of the ADSL ISP's who provide for or supply audio stream hosting? I need/want to stream live content to a local audience once a week for a few hours.

If not, how would I set it up to run straight from my side? Static IP???

ANY help here would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance

The setup can be found at this site:

Google keyword: streaming audio setup

It appears you'd have to use RealPlayer formats to take advantage of audio streaming. And yes you'd need a static IP from your side, if you did it that way.

RealPlayer and its encoding do cater for live and pre-recorded streaming. All you need do is create the correctly encoded Realplayer file and a customer can listen to it by typing in the URL to the file from Realplayer itself.

Web Africa uses MIME types in their hosting that will allow you to place audio files on a website.

You could run it on your own PC if you have enough upstream bandwidth.
Using dynamic DNS is good enough - no need for a static IP.

Streaming software :
Icecast
Shoutcast (from Nullsoft - the guys who made Winamp)
Xiph.org

Hi and thanx for the replies!

With just a 512K line it is not going to go very far if I start streaming directly from my server this side so it looks like what I really need is an ISP or other company who offers stream hosting so that I can send a single high quality stream to them and people then pick up the stream from their server.

Lots of stream hosting solutions offered elsewhere in the world but then not only does my own international bandwidth get eaten but it would also mean that everyone listening in would have the same problem seeing as though the largest majority would be South African listeners. hmmmmmmmm

Yeah, for the radio station I have been working on, we use Nullsoft Shoutcast. Its loaded onto our webserver, running on port 8000

PS. my recommendation is use winamp to encode with shoutcast and use the AAC+ codec. i streamed at 24k and to the naked ear (on pc speakers anyway) my listeners thought it was cd quality
