I bought a WD TV Live.

I'm getting it hooked up to my TV but dont want external hard drives lying around, I have a Wireless N Router that can take an external hard drive.
The WD TV Live has Wireless N

Most of my stuff is in HD.

Which would be better less grey hair inducing.

WD TV will be stuck behind TV.
Just find a place for an external drive and hide behind TV.

OR

Connect External Drive to router USB and stream from it to WD TV Live.

My TV is stuck to wall, behind the wall is my garage where router is.
So distance between WD and router will be wall thickness.

The only way to know for sure is to test both and see which gives you the better performance.
I have a Wireless N network at home and I can stream HD movies without a problem as long as I don't try to connect the external to the usb of the router. My router just can't handle media over the usb so I get terrible stuttering results.
But you may be lucky.

On further googling and reading I see plenty issues with streaming over wifi N.
Think ill have to attach it directly as it is meant to be, don't like messy cables all over the place.

Well, I don't have issues as long as I don't stream from the usb port on the router. But wifi is a fickle mistress and what works for one may not do so for another. Connecting directly to the live is your safest bet, without a doubt.

I'm no expert but cant you just connect the HDD to your computer and stream it from there?

A lot will depend on the bitrate of your HD content. I don't think you should have too many issues if everything is set up properly and the Wifi router is not too far away from the media player.

Tried last night - it streamed Avatar 1080p 55Gb file but took a while to get started, think I'll just re-arrange my Viewing setup and try and hide the external drive or mount behind the TV.

I used to do this until I gave up...

It would work perfectly for weeks on end, then go into mad stuttering mode for a few days.. then work again, then stutter...

Its way to dependent on the signal strength and any random interference's in the area.
