Streaming Question

Okay guys here is the situation.

I opted for the 2Mb uncapped line(my area according to Telkom can only do that)

I'm not a gamer, nor do I download torrents or anything like that. I intend to use only for streaming, the odd email and a bit of browsing.

Here is the issue, and I'm hoping to get answers from those who are experienced around this.

My line will be installed in 2 weeks time, so I was talking to 3 Telkom reps and was told that there is a fair usage policy of 100GB's on the uncapped package, before I am throttled.
I was told that even though my FUP is 100GBS, I can do 150 to 200GB's without being throttled, if I only do streaming, but no big torrent downloads and Gaming.

I was told that streaming are normally prioritised, but is this indeed the case with Telkom? It would be a bummer, if I'm throttled doing nothing more than stream and the odd email and browsing here and there.

Please note I'm new to adsl, and don't have much of a clue what is deemed acceptable.

So I have a 4MB uncapped line with Telkom. I average around 130GB-150GB per month and the primary use of the line is streaming neflix and I use Genesis on XMBC / Kodi. I have never had a throttling issue.

Based on my experience thus far I don't see an issue with what you plan on doing. The only issue I foresee you having is that I don't believe a 2MB line is going to be fast enough for video streaming services.
 
I'm not even a big streamer either. I run our Neighbourhood watch website, so that is more important. I checked with a few, and the general consensus is, that if I stream SD content, then a 2MB line would be okay.
 
720p can work for me, if 2MB line is okay. Don't care really for Full HD 1080p

Take your line from Telkom and go to Vox for the isp. Been using their fatpipe data for a long time now and for streaming its perfect

How's the performance on Genesis? I'm on a 4MB uncapped line with Telkom as well. Netflix and Hulu stream perfectly on my PS3 but Genesis on my Andriod TV box is awful - the only way that I can get it to play without buffering is if I reduce the quality to the lowest quality.

How does this work, if I'm a new Telkom user. I just done everything with Telkom. Voice, adsl line and the 2MB uncapped data. I'm also getting a free modem, and the installation will be done for R579 month to month.

Is there a time period, that one has to wait, before migrating the line from Telkom to Vox? And would I be charged for it, considering I'm getting the modem from Telkom?

If you took out the contract with telkom and got the free modem your bound to them for 2 years. The contract does not stop you from getting a concurrent data package from a different isp but you'll have to pay two isp's then. You can upgrade your line inside the 2 year contract to get a faster speed if needed.

Edit: If you upgrade your line speed you have to upgrade your uncapped speed too unlike with capped packages.

Confirm if you have the 2 year contract and if so stop them before they installed and cancel the order and place it again but buy your own modem cash and say you want a month to month service with them. It shouldn't affect your monthly price.

Not what I asked for, and again I specifically asked the guy on the line i want it month to month.

I'll pm Charl, and ask him to check my order. I have a Huawei B315 modem here at homr, so if they are binding me to a 2 year contract, then I won't be happy.

My installation is only happening in 2 weeks time, so I'll have to ask them what is happening.

Oh and the 2 weeks is a estimate, they could be at your door tomorrow.

Not bad. I don't use HD streams, I usually use the HQ streams. However on the odd occasion I drop it to MQ (still not too bad on a 40" LED). What I find works best is not waiting for buffering. So if I select a HQ stream and it loads the video, but its buffering I give it 3 sec, if the video doesnt start, I then stop and go to the next HQ stream.

thats what i use to do, the other thing is to stop it, and then just go in the same link again.
 
you aint gonna stream 720p on 2mb.

interesting this, because i use to stream 720p off my sim card, and i was streaming at under 1mb. with, an initial buffer for a second or 2, the movie played without buffering again.

so is mobile data, or the 3G data over wireless network a bit better than a fixed line in terms of this?
