Good evening,

Just a quick question here regarding the 5G options offered by Rain.

Both the unlimited home 5G basic and unlimited home 5G standard packages stipulate a maximum streaming resolution of 720p and 1080p respectively. If they actually do cap the streaming resolution, how do they do it?

For example, my folks are sitting with a 4mbps LTE package from Telkom, which is majorly slow but they can still stream a 1080p YouTube video if there is only one user on the internet.

O okay so they basically throttle the bandwidth of whatever streaming service you are using but can't physically prevent you from choosing the stream resolution that you want.

Rain has on net caches for Google, Netflix and Akamai (DSTV & Showmax).

They limit the bandwith to these. You can force it to higher quality but will buffer a lot.

Ahh okay makes sense. Is this on net cache restricted to streaming content only or are other forms of bandwidth usage also capped (under the stipulated download speeds)? Such as direct downloads or P2P? My company uses P2P as a method of file sharing.

On the 5G Standard and I think they throttle downloads from Google Drive as well

I’m on the R699 per month one (forgot the package name) and I constantly stream YouTube videos on 1440p. Granted I only watch YouTube via the tv and not a laptop. No buffering at all.

You will struggle with P2P.

Major throttling.

On 4G & 5G they limit the bandwidth based on the URL, they'll throttle accordingly. So streaming services & google stuff etc etc they will throttle.

Solution, VPN.

I can stream 1080 60fps content on my 4G package with a vpn, without it 480p is a struggle, its also not clean bandwidth throttling, the latency is worsened as well and if you try to do a couple of things at the same time, eg loading a number of pages quickly it'll crap all over itself slowing to almost nothing.

From past experience with Rain 4G, in the beginning everything was super lekker - streaming was a bliss at 1080p, p2p downloads was between 5mbps to 15mbps speed. It has gotten worse and worse to throttling of streaming to 144p and p2p was almost none existent at 25kbps if I am lucky. I had to cancel because I had been to frustrated. I cannot comment on 5G since it is not available in my area. I was on the R250 unlimited off peak (23:00 - 18:00)

If you want true uncapped, unshaped, unthrottled internet with NO FUP - rather get fiber if available in your area. I can recommend Afrihost for super service on fiber. All streaming, downloading, P2P is unshaped. Also you can use as much data as you like - you will never be slowed down - no matter what you do on the internet.
