Street name changes =Epic fail.

The ANC cannot do anything right IMO. The street name changes are a major and epic fail because the streets which are and should be changed due to racism aren't and they are just looking for "visibility" in major and busy areas:-


The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says it’s concerned about the number of major accidents in the past few weeks, involving public transport vehicles. The comment follows the latest accident in Vereeniging in the Vaal, which claimed 12 lives.

A truck and a minibus collided head-on at the intersection of Houtkop and Boy Louw roads, leaving both vehicles extensively damaged. The Vaal accident came after three major accidents in which a total of 68 people were killed in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape.

I must admit when I heard the report on the accident and when they said where it was I had a little WTF moment about the street name.

Some called 702 and said the name came from a nearby kopjie where wood was cut.

Woodenhead, I'm not really sure why it is derogative, but its context has the same meaning as K@ff3r.

I guess it would mean if your head is made out of wood then you have to be stupid, or the wood resembles the black colour. Something along those lines.
 
Wasn't aware that it was racist. Thought it just meant a stupid person, one level up from a "domkop" . :confused:
 
Dude that's a pretty old slang word. I also laughed the other day when I heard that on the radio. LOL :D

I don't understand how certain terms become derogatory, for example gook. Because inherently there is nothing offensive about it, from the definition. I can only assume it is the intent with which it is said.

Golliwogs became non-PC in England after a dark-skinned gentleman from Jamaica complained to Harold MacMillan in the 1960's. The toys were withdrawn from shops and the word expunged from dictionaries.

It became offensive over time, as its usage was consistantly backdropped by total war.

So true, I live in an area with street names like Verwoerd and Langenhoven - have yet to hear of any plans to change them.
