Golliwogs became non-PC in England after a dark-skinned gentleman from Jamaica complained to Harold MacMillan in the 1960's. The toys were withdrawn from shops and the word expunged from dictionaries.
The golliwog has a long history but political correctness has poisoned the whole concept. The British jam manufacturer, Robertson & Sons used a golliwog as their logo and the golliwog was a key player in Enid Blyton's Noddy stories.
When the name changing fantasy first came up a few years ago EGOLI was touted as the new name for Jozi and very quickly the wags suggested that EGOLLIWOG was more suitable.
