The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said on Wednesday it may embark on a strike at fixed line phone company Telkom over pay demands this week.

Unionised workers are demanding that Telkom implement a 7,5% salary increase from April 1, 2009 but Telkom wants to implement the increase in October.

"A protracted strike is inevitable and may commence soon ...," CWU General Secretary Gallant Roberts said in a statement.

It's only the COSATU aligned union that wants to strike.

Telkom, Vodacom, ICASA, COSATU.... ring any bells?

Good for them.
I have heard so many horror stories from these very very hard working people at Telkom.

Its not like Telkom does'nt have the dosh. They make net profits of in the Billions. They treated their people and customers like crap for years.

Although they are now making some sort of effort it is way too late and they should be held accountable. One small effort does not erase the past. For years they increased tarrifs and lined the pockets of their shareholders instead of maintaining the infrastructure. Nevermind growing it. They robbed this country of growth and progress.

I honnestly hope that these guys get work at other companies.
