A strong explosion shook Athens late Sunday, damaging a bank and insurance agency.

Thousands were awoken by the blast, but no one was injured or killed because police had cleared the area after receiving an anonymous tip, state television reported.

The national bank and insurance agency in the central Syngrou avenu were heavily damaged, eyewitnesses said.

Authorities believed leftist groups blamed for attacks against police in recent months were behind the explosion.

Since police killed a 15-year-old demonstrator in December 2008, the Greek capital city has been beset by violent protests and multiple bombings against police stations, banks and state agencies.

Holy crap. Someone was telling me things are really bad in Greece right now like a revolution in the making, I brushed it off when I heard it. I guess its true.

Speculation: I think the dead teenager was simply a trigger (an excuse) to register profound dissatisfaction with the Greek government by the youth. I cannot speak with authority here – I am a European mongrel with no particular loyalty to any country (except SA, that’s why the current cock-up annoys me).

Consider the Greek situation. Greek youth have been taught about the ancient Greek heritage, which predates the Roman Empire. Justice, scholarship, democracy, mythology (still with us) etc. And not shabby militarily either (Sparta). And it’s all true! The youth must be pissed-off!.

The same goes for Egypt and Arabs in general. Consider: Ancient Egypt etc. Arab culture was, at one time, hugely respected. A centre of scholarship (mathematics, astronomy, etc.) and civilization compared to the West. In the context of the times, it was considered enlightened. There is not an Arab on the planet who would not wish for these halcyon times of admiration and respect to return. I would estimate that Arab culture started declining and degenerating in earnest after Saladin, culminating in modern Arab culture. Egypt, as a repository for enlightened Arab culture (ancient Egypt etc.), is in the vanguard of protecting Arab values. Cultural decline has been fairly slow. Terrorist organizations (such as Hamas) is accelerating the decline (and perception) of Arab culture a 100 fold.

Note - The Arab nations and Israel want the same thing – a weakening or a halt to Hamas – for different reasons. They [Arabs] dare not side openly with Israel as this would be seen as a gross betrayal of Arab solidarity against a traditional enemy, but would not weep overmuch to see Hamas destroyed.

The horns of a dilemma.

How long are they going to keep pretending that this is all part of ordinary political discourse? Honestly, there was less **** flying here in the '70's and '80's.

African savages!Creeping in and dísrupting way of life of the civilised.

I'm glad no one was injured
