JOHANNESBURG –At least one person has been rushed to hospital after a section of the roof connecting Sandton City and the Nelson Mandela Square caved in.

Paramedics escorted the woman out of the mall on a stretcher a short while ago.

ER24'S Werner Vermaak said, “Parts of the roof debris fell on top of her and she sustained possible fracture to her ankle and a deep cut. She was stabilised at the scene and later transported to hospital.”

It's understood that a ceiling between the banking mall and Nelson Mandela Square has caved in.

Shoppers have described scenes of chaos as they try to navigate their way through the rubble.

A woman who is there said there are ambulances waiting outside the mall.

“Nobody is allowed on the bridge and security is guarding the area.”

Management is going to hit the roof.

Looks like the **** hit the (ceiling) fan.

Sandton city, where the prices (and roof) are crashing down!

Is it the ceiling or the roof? Bit of a difference there. Structural collapse sounds more like the whole place caved in

This seems to happen in a lot of SA malls.

Yes it does, because of them being built at the speed of a wounded leopard because the owners cannot wait to get the profits rolling in.

Or all them fatty mamas bouncing around the malls packed to the brims 247...

This isn't the sort of thing you'd expect at Sandton City. Got to hurt their reputation. And pride too.

Was there around 6 and I guess they had cleaned up everything already since I didn't even notice anything had happened :/

So in the article it says ceiling but title says structural collapse... fire that oke!

'I thank God I'm alive' - Sandton City collapse victim

Johannesburg - A 25-year-old woman whose leg was severely crushed when a part of the ceiling at the Sandton City collapsed on her on Thursday said she was grateful to be alive.

"I just thank God for sparing me," Elfi Loambo told News24 from her hospital bed at the Sandton Medi-Clinic.

"That roof could have hit my head and my family would have had to go on without me. Even though it is going to take time for me to heal, I am blessed," she said.

Sandton City denies neglecting roof collapse victim

Sandton City centre management have denied that they been ignoring the young student who was hurt when a section of the roof collapsed on her last week.

In a Facebook post Lucie Ndjeka, a friend of 25 -year- old Elfi Loambo, who was the victim in the Sandton City roof collapse, claimed that the centre management had not visited her friend, nor made any effort to find out how she was doing in hospital.

According to Ndjeka, the centre had also not made any effort to brief the family on what might have caused the accident. Ndjeka also posted pictures of Loambo’s injuries
