I am looking at a laptop for a student. She's studying social sciences, so word processing, browsing, and a bit of light PowerPoint. something with a decent screen for reading would also help.

Budget is limited, so I'm wondering about new Celerons. Given a bit of RAM and an SSD, my guess is that they should be up to the job.

This is way out of my comfort zone. Last time I was a student, I was running Monte Carlo Simulations on a PVM cluster.

He was looking at a Celeron and people suggest a macbook and stuff from flashgear that usually starts at 14k+

A 14-15" HD/FHD screen, Celeron 4020 or better with 8gb ram and a 250gb nvme ssd is around 5.5-7k new depending on brand is more than enough for word processing/browsing. If more is needed then obviously a better cpu would be needed at a higher cost. A decent screen a this pricepoint though, dont expect accurate colours/viewing angles

I have an HP Zbook 15 with 16GB RAM, 500GB HDD, charger but no battery. Full HD display. Make me an offer and take it

You can get an Air for R12.5k. Even cheaper if you shop around. https://www.facebook.com/marketplac...wse_serp:c8d71e26-7bb9-48e5-a390-d1b7c1e5bcb3

I think there's a bit of a comprehension issue here...

This is probably the best response. CPU won't matter as much as long as you have a minimum of 8gb of ram and a SSD.

Unless you hate her, don't get a crleron.

At least an i3 with 8GB of ram and windows 11. Work gave me one and it was OK.

Try C2KIT - they sell used laptops from R3,999.00 up. Includes Win10 (normally Pro), 12 months warranty etc.

Recommended.

Ok. So what eventually happened went as follows. I got hold of the machine and poked around a bit. It's a few years' old HP 15s, with a Celeron, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. The machine was slow to the point of being unresponsive, but showing low utilisation of the processor and RAM and 100% on the HDD. I've seen this behaviour before on much higher spec machines and fixed it by putting in an SSD. So, first step, as I figured was to get a 500GB SSD. I struggled with cloning the hard drive to the SSD - note to self: next time get an SSD which comes with cloning software - so did a clean Windows 10 install and bunged the old hard drive into an external enclosure.

The outcome was a relatively responsive machine and a happy student.

Also, an answer to my original question. A modernish Celeron and an SSD works for a student who's going to be browsing and doing a bit of word processing and the occasional PowerPoint presentation.
