Student laptop

He was looking at a Celeron and people suggest a macbook and stuff from flashgear that usually starts at 14k+

A 14-15" HD/FHD screen, Celeron 4020 or better with 8gb ram and a 250gb nvme ssd is around 5.5-7k new depending on brand is more than enough for word processing/browsing. If more is needed then obviously a better cpu would be needed at a higher cost. A decent screen a this pricepoint though, dont expect accurate colours/viewing angles

hell .... even my Dell i7 doesn't have a decent screen in terms of the aspects you are describing and something equivalent to mine would now cost around R15k to R17k (if bought brand new)

I would try get an HP Elitebook from the 830/840/850 depending on screen size really. G4 series up, although the G3 is ok, it had hitches. You can probs look between 4-6k for one.

They have batteries that last quite lot, and generally pretty decent. I would get the I5, with 8gb of ram, you can upgrade another 8gb for about R400 2nd hand (Always go crucial) and you can also change it to a samsung nvme later on, some has nvme. And you can download windows 10 usb file from microsoft and upgrade it to windows 10 for free, if it has windows 7 (serial key embedded in the bios, so it will auto-authenticate.

Something like that, but you can honestly pick them up anywhere on facebook marketplace for much cheaper.

Sooo Crucial compatibility checking will tell you max ram and which hdd.

Do note there is a speed in hdd ssd and m.2 sata and nvme

hdd is about 170mbps
ssd is about 400-560mbps
m.2 sata is about 2000-3500mbps
nvme is about 4000-8500mbps

If you have an old laptop, rather than adding in more ram, go for an ssd, one of those 2.5" ssd

Samsung Pro is best, but below it is the evo plus and then the evo. It will give you far more speed changing to ssd than to even go from 4gb-8gb of ram. (but do go 8gb if its your limit, like i said, check your manufacturer limits on the crucial site. if the limit is 8gb dont go 16gb. not designed for it.

If you want a workhorse. Get an HP Zbook, ideally a Zbook 15 g3. It has 4x ddr4 ram slots, 2x nvme slots and 1x2.5" ssd slot. You can change the graphics card on them even, but its a helluva headache. Even the 1000M Quadro card can handle games like fortnite on medium settings.

i'm confused, i did say the screens are not good at the pricepoint right ?

and i'm adding that even at a higher pricepoint you would not always get good screens - so expecting a good screen at that pricepoint is hardly realistic - whats confusing about that?
