Ciandi Vosloo screamed as two robbers ran off with her cellphone in Centurion this week, but seconds later one returned and attempted to cut off her right arm, almost succeeding in severing it completely.

His razor-sharp pocketknife only stopped when it hit the bone. The blade tore through the nerves, arteries and muscles in her arm and student from Roodepoort, 23, had to undergo a seven-hour operation at Pretoria's Unitas Hospital to repair the damage.

She will only know in eight to 18 months whether she will regain use of her right hand.

Vosloo was attacked as she was walking from the Centurion Academy campus, where she is a fifth-year hospitality and catering student.

WTF??

Reminds me of another story where they gouged eyes of the victim so that he can't identify them later. Also cellphone robbery.

Now we can start leaving in droves. It's becoming like Argentina (where they will happily cut off an appendage for something that is considered valuable - in the street during the day).

Some good old temporary Fascism should do the trick. Not mucking about. Line them up and shoot the baastards.

That'll last how long? The problem is not the existing criminals, it's the environment they come from that breeds them.

I agree it would be very hard for any party to solve the crime problem, and if they do it will still take many years.
