University students are brazenly cheating in test and exams, the Sunday Times reported.

At the universities of the Witwatersand, Johannesburg, Stellenbosch and North West, as well as Unisa, among others, more than 1400 students have been found guilty of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, in the past year.

Experts agreed this figure was just the tip of the iceberg because many cheats were never caught.

Figures uncovered during the Sunday Times investigations of students cheating did not cover all tertiary educational institutions in this country because only 10 of the 23 responded to a request for data.

Higher education Deputy Minister Mduduzi Manana said he was worried about cheating and that academics had also spoken out.

"We don't need half-baked graduates in our country. We need graduates who have acquired enough knowledge to take it forward," said Manana.

"We have said to our institutions that they must tighten all loose ends. Those who think they can get away with murder and cheat must be exposed," said Manana.

In response to widespread cheating, the University of SA (Unisa) barred 519 students from studying for at least three years for using 'unauthorised material' during exams.

It permanently expelled 20 students for buying or selling exam papers.

Figures provided by other universities showed that 535 students cheated or plagiarised at North West University, 153 did so at the University of Johannesburg, 66 at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 35 at Stellenbosch University, 31 at the University of Witwatersrand, and 27 at the University of the Western Cape.

And this is just exams ....

It seems the "hard line" at NWU for postgraduate plagiarism is not summary execution but rather
North-West University, which has adopted a no-nonsense approach to plagiarism, slapped five postgraduate students with two-year bans, suspended for three years, for plagiarising their theses.
They were allowed to continue their research but were forced to change their topic.

By all means let them continue research but for ****s sake if fees is a grounds to withhold graduation then surely committing fraud should put the awarding of the degree on ice.

Good thing I went to UCT

So my old varsity have honest students. Go UWC! hehe

Can't wait to show this to my NWU colleague. She's always going on about how great they are..

Can't make a conclusion either way about the institutions that aren't mentioned from this article.

In my honours year there was a specific exam that is scheduled for three hours, but every year the poor students sit for 7+ hours. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad.

Reveal time: I scored 17% in that test and got the best in our year group too! :P

E&M by any chance? :p

I cheated in a 'met ander woorde' Afrikaans test in std 7 once.

Got caught, that was that.

These schools should focus on continuous assessment, after a chapter or 2 you write an exam and you done with that chapter.Instead of making people read the whole damn book and after choosing 4 question from the book in June or December. I remember studying and knowing very well that a few sections are gonna be picked, that was demoralizing. If ppl are gonna study the whole book at least ask 90% of the content.

I don't see the point of cheating, it makes no sense. You're only fooling yourself.
It depends on what you /mean/ by cheating. Lines can get very blurry, and sometimes it is in your interest not to suffer through something with just a pen and blank paper.
