Students help themselves to 7,000 government tablets

So the idiots didn't think to withhold results until the tabs were returned? Course not.
 
Earlier this month, the Citizen reported that the education department distributed 64,000 tablets to pupils in 2015 – of which it recovered 81%, meaning that approximately 12,000 tablets are missing.

Over R1 million in damages to school facilities and equipment was recorded due to break-ins over the 2015/16 December school holidays at 23 schools in Gauteng.

And in other news ... Pravin has thrown R647 billion on basic education, including R36.7 billion on school infrastructure and R197 billion on post-school education and training as well as R18 billion on providing free meals to over 9 million learners.

Good to know where my tax money is being [-]spent[/-] wasted.
 
R3 500.00 each? I would have expected these things to be basic Proline jobbies of the sub 1K persuasion.

More like cheap R500 chinese tablets marked up to R3500 each. Tenderpreneur indeed.
 
Seems like a silly strategy to begin with. How long are they expecting these tablets to last anyway - for the duration of a 5yr high school curriculum and then passed on? They should rather have taken the view that each student be given a tablet that then belongs to them and which they can keep for life, because we all know this is going to happen anyway, and tablets and technology have a limited lifespan.

Letting them just have the tablets would be of greater long term benefit as students can keep their course material for future reference when they leave school and will have a tool to assist them in finding jobs and private learning or research if they're so motivated. Plus, each new intake year can stay current with the latest tablet technology.

What is the strategy for keeping the technology current and managing the obsolescence of these things anyway? Did they just buy thousands of tablets and hope those would last indefinitely?

That is about R10 per head per day in the school year(200 days). Given what I have seen schools feed to their learners (pap), I would say there is (as usual) a huge amount of corruption and wastage going on in that dept.
 
Free Tablets just now you will have every High School pupils in the land
Toy-Toying stoning cars and burning things, wanting there Tablet. I think
the initial idea was a trial needless to say it was a complete failure.
